The tribes in the Cordillera Administrative Region

(CAR) are known for their colorful hand-woven

textiles. Because of the cold weather experienced

in the highlands, they weave their own blankets,

linen, and clothing with thick fibers.

The ikat (an Indonesian word meaning “to bind


together”) is the woven textile fabric of Ifugaos. Its
design is commonly characterized by white and
diamond stripes woven in an elaborate pattern.

Kalinga-Apayao is known for its intricate hand


woven textiles designed with geometric patterns
and natural symbols.

BASKETRY AND
WOVEN CRAFTS
Basketry is one of the most well-known crafts
from the Cordillera region. The baskets made
in highland Luzon are usually made of
bamboo, rattan, and straw.
Baskets are commonly used in storing and
carrying crops like fruits and vegetables to
the market.

The uniquely-woven baskets also attract


tourists that roam around the markets of
Baguio. They buy these baskets and use them
as containers or decorative items in their
homes.

The tribes of the highlands also make woven crafts
for their everyday living. For instance, the Bontoc
tribe of ifugao makes baskets called Bobo and
Suklang. They also weave a straw hat called
salakot.

and other ceramic materials, which are fired at

high temperatures to give them a hard, durable

form.

The Bontoc tribe is known for pottery. They

make practical objects as water vessels,

plates, and cups they used in everyday lives.

accessories. The most noted jewelry that they make is the
Filigree jewelry.

formed in to and intricate design.

Accessories and body ornaments of the cordillera
tribes are not only used for decorative purposes;
they are also believed to be possessing powers
that help the Cordillera people in their lives.

The amulet of Ifugao is called
lingling-o, which is considered to
help in the fertility of women. It
resembles the shape of the
woman’s uterus with a fetus inside.
 
The lingling-o is made of various
materials such as Gold, clay, stone,
shell, jade, and copper.

distinguished for their body tattoos.
These tattoos play and important role in
the warrior culture of the tribe.
It is believed that these tattoos have
spiritual powers to give strength and
protection during hunting and battles.
Tattoos also symbolize a reward for a
successful quest or high status in the
community.

ARCHITECTURE
The architecture structure in highland is similar with that
found in the lowlands. For instance, the home of the Ifugaos
resemble the design of the bahay kubo;
ARCHITECTURE

The Ivatans from Batanes build their homes to adapt to the

extreme weather conditions that they experience.

Their houses are built close to the ground and composed of

thick stone walls with small windows to protect them from

strong rains and typhoons. A pampet, or roof net, is put over the

roof of these homes and tied to trees or stones to secure the

roof during the stormy weather.

SCULPTURE

The bulul of the ifugao tribe is a wooden sculpture which is

placed in pairs alongside rice granaries. They are commonly

depicted to be in a sitting position and are believed to be the

guardians of the harvest.
