Definitions of education
Definitions of Education
 Education is the process of developing or
perfecting human beings. It tries to cultivate the
humanity of man by developing his specifically
human excellences – both intellectual and moral.
The ultimate goals of education are human
happiness and the welfare of society. Its
products are good men and good citizens.

~ Adler, Great Ideas from Great Books

Definitions of Education
 Education is the teaching and training of one’s
character and mind. All men live in a society.
All men have a personality to develop and the
power of living ill or well. He must learn to earn
a living, to be a good member of the society.
Education as a means of perpetuating and re-
interpreting national ideals or transmitting the
good life has long been universally recognised
as an important function.

~ From Comparative Studies of South East

Asian Education
Definitions of Education
 The word ‘education’ comes from the root e from ex, out,
and duco, I lead. It means leading out. To me education
is a leading out of what is already there in a pupil’s soul.
To Miss Mackay it is a putting in of something that is not
there and that is not what I call education. I call it
intrusion, from the Latin root prefix in meaning in and the
stem trudo, I thrust. Miss Mackay’s method is to thrust a
lot of information into the pupil’s head; mine is a leading
out of knowledge, and that is proved by the root meaning

~ From The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Muriel Spark
