CONSTRUCTIVIST THEORY IN

TEACHING MATHEMATICS
IN INTERMEDIATE GRADES
Note:
Good afternoon everyone. I am Sofia F. Apuyan you’re reporter this
afternoon. I hope you can learn something from my report. Thank you. My
topic is all about “ CONSTRUCTIVIST THEORY IN TEACHING
MATHEMATICS IN INTERMEDIATE GRADES”.

Constructivist Theory is also known as the CONSTRUCTIVIST APPROACH.

Note:
Lets start defining what is Constructivist Theory for now I
will tell you the meaning of Constructivism the root word of
Constructivist.
CONSTRUCTIVISM – is the theory that says
learners construct knowledge rather than just
passively take in information.
Note:
This means that as people experience the world and reflect upon those
experiences, they already build their own representations and incorporate
new information into their pre- existing knowledge. I will give you an
example.
Example:
An elementary school teacher presents a class problem to
measure the length of the ”Mayflower” rather than starting the
problem by introducing the ruler, the teacher allows students
to reflect and to construct their own methods of measurement.
INTRODUCTION
ACCORDING TO DEPED:

 Constructivist Theory was the backbone of the curriculum.

 Knowledge is constructed when the learner is able to draw ideas from his/
her own experience and connect them to new ideas.
Note:
Now I will introduce you who is Jean Piaget.
JEAN PIAGET
 an educational theorist that conceptualized constructivism.

 he also believed that young children learn by constructing knowledge from

experiences rather than from adults telling them about the world.

 he also practice constructivist education, the method that is most likely to

educate the students is the one in which they experience their world.
Note:
It says that Constructivism is applied in teaching mathematics since math
is a cumulative and vertically structured discipline.
CONSTRUCTIVIST LEARNING IS DESCRIBED AS
FOLLOWS:
 Learning builds on the learner’s prior knowledge and the approach is a constructive
process.
 Learners involves in the processes to ensure self- regulated and self- directed process.
 Learning is grounded in the context of the learners and fundamentally social process.
Interaction and communication are open and basic element of learning process.
 Learning is more than the acquisition of knowledge. It is collaborative, involve
interaction and enculturation with community of practitioners. Collaboration with
experts is basic.
 The learning process do not only require cognitive but also motivational and
emotional domains.
Note:
This only means that in a constructivist Mathematics class, the knowledge is
constructed by the learners.
Note:
Always remember that TO TEACH is NOT TO ESPLAIN, NOT TO
LECTURE, NOT TO TRANSFER mathematical knowledge; instead teaching is
to create situations that allow the learner’s to form the mental construction.
Note:
There are some Recommendation on how to apply Constructivism in a class,
especially for those Mathematics teachers.
RECOMMENDATIONS ON HOW TO APPLY
CONSTRUCTIVISM IN TEACHING
MATHEMATICS:

• pose problems that is relevant to the learners.

Note:
This is to avoid difficulties for the learners to
create their own ideas.
• use big concepts than segmented of disjoints topics.
It invites the learners to participate irrespective of
learning styles and dispositions.
Note:
This helps the students to have an easy understanding
about the topics, if its has a concept that has no many
divisions of topics.
• Create situations that will reveal the learner’s point of
view. The teacher must create opportunities for this to
occur and must be willing to listen to the learners
reasoning and thinking processes.
Note:
The best situations that the teacher can create is the
situation that the learners already experienced in their life
in order to have as easy creation of idea to their reasons.
• Use authentic assessments, which includes
interaction between the teacher and learner
and learner and peer.
Note:

Because of this the teacher and the learner could create a better
understanding and interaction that could build a good relationship.
