ni guys:D Through The Years THE INTERNET OF THINGS Introduction Internet of things (IoT) emerged as a concept about 20 years ago and is now making headlines around the world. Everyone talks about connectivity, smart devices, real-time data extraction, etc. IoT has evolved from being a simple device, into the more advanced technologies we know as of today. We will look back to the important events of IoT through the years 1990 1st IoT Device
•The internet toaster was
created by John Romkey. •It is a toaster that is connected to a computer •Has one control to turn on/off •Still needs a person to insert bread 1999 IoT term is coined •In 1999 British technology pioneer Kevin Ashton, co- founder of the Auto-ID Laboratory at MIT, invented the term "The Internet of Things" to describe a system where the Internet is connected to the physical world via sensors, which serves as the “eye” and “ear” of the computer. 2000 Internet Connected Refrigetator
•By the late 1990s and the
early 2000s, the idea of connecting home appliances to the internet had been popularized and was seen as the next big thing. •The LG Internet Digital DIOS is an internet refrigerator released by LG Electronics in June 2000. •This refrigerator was an unsuccessful product because the consumers had seen it as unnecessary and expensive (more than $20,000) 2008 1st IoT Conference
•The 1st Iot conference was held in
Zurich, Switzerland on March 26- 28, 2008. •The conference was the first that brought leading researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry together to facilitate sharing of applications, research results, and knowledge. 2011 Nest Thermostat •The Nest Thermostat is a smart thermostat developed by Nest Labs and designed by Tony Fadell. •It is an electronic, programmable, and self-learning, Wi-Fi-enabled thermostat that optimizes heating and cooling of homes and businesses to conserve energy. •The thermostat can then learn people's schedule, at which temperature they are used to and when. Using built-in sensors and phones' locations, it can shift into energy saving mode when it realizes nobody is at home. Oxford Dictionary adds IoT 2013 •Oxford Dictionary adds the term “Internet of Things” in 2013. •It is defined as “The connection of devices within everyday objects via the internet, enabling them to share data.” Echo and Alexa 2014 •Amazon Echo, often shortened to Echo, is an American brand of smart speakers developed by Amazon. Echo devices connect to the voice-controlled intelligent personal assistant service Alexa, which will respond when a user says "Alexa“. •Alexa is capable of voice interaction, music playback, making to-do lists, setting alarms, and providing weather, traffics, and other real-time information, such as news. Alexa can also control several smart devices using itself as a home automation system. 2016 Mirai Botnet • Mirai is malware that infects smart devices that run on ARC processors, turning them into a network of remotely controlled bots or "zombies". This network of bots, called a botnet, is often used to launch DDoS attacks. It was created by Paras Jha Josiah White •The source code of the malware was quickly replicated by other cybercriminals, and is believed to be behind the massive attack that infected over 600,000 IoT devices. 2020 Growing Numbers •According to Statista, there are about 21.5 billion interconnected devices in the world. •With 1.3 billion projected subscriptions by 2023, IoT is about to experience another boost by the 5G technology. •By 2022, Google Home will have the largest IoT devices market share, at 48%. •The average number of connected devices per household in 2020 was 10. •By 2021, 35 billion IoT devices will be installed around the world. Conclusion
We cannot evade the technological revolution.
Connectivity brings far too many benefits to neglect. Therefore, it will soon become something as natural as electricity or tap water. The Future will all be connected ,and IoT will be an integral part of it, for the benefit of mankind. Wala na finish na ko
