Historical Method

• Historical method is the collection of techniques


and guidelines that historians use to research
and write histories of the past.

• Process of systematically examining an account


of what has happened in the past

• Uses Historical Criticism to evaluate Historical


Sources
The most commonly recognised historical
methodologies include: Palaeography (study of
historical handwriting), diplomatics, the study of
documents, records and archives, chronology
(establishing the dates of past events), the study of
publications, epigraphy (study of ancient
inscriptions).

Content VS. Context
 
Content is the material/matter/medium
contained within the work that’s available for
audience.
Context is the positioning of the content,
storyline or purpose that provides value to
the audience.
Content can come in several forms: audio, video, written,
visual (photo).

But, although you have these forms, why are you creating the
content? What exactly is the purpose? What sort of outcome
are you looking for? With each content piece there needs to
be context.
The Author’s
Perspective
 
Perspective is the 'point of view' from which
the creator of a source described historical
events. Every person sees and understands
events differently depending on their age,
gender, social position, beliefs and values.
Even modern historians have their own
perspectives which can influence how they
interpret the past.
● Background – a short history about the author’s life

● Point-of-View – perspective used by the author that determines the


approximate “distance” of the author to the narrative he or she is
writing

● Argument – also called purpose; the author’s stand or opinion in the


narrative

● Attitude – almost similar to Argument, but reflects the mood more,


which is observed on how the author addressed his or her argument
○ reflects the current situation and emotion of the author in the
material at the time it was written or made
