Interpreting
• Interpreting consists of presenting in
the target language, the exact meaning
of what is uttered in the source
language either simultaneously or
consecutively, preserving the tone of
the speaker.
Consecutive Interpreting

• In consecutive interpreting the interpreter


listens to a speech while taking notes. When
the speaker has finished, the interpreter stands
up and delivers the speech in his or her native
language. The speech could be as long as fifteen
minutes nowadays although in the past thirty
minutes was not unusual. The interpretation is
not a summary; it is a complete rendition of the
original speech in another language.

• In situations where simultaneous interpreting
equipments are not available.
• In question – answer situations .
• Press conferences .
• Translation courses.
Skills required in consecutive interpreting :
• Knowledge of language.
• Memory .
• Concentration and understanding.
• Ability of Negative listening.
• Note-taking.
• Clear delivery of speech in front of
audience.
