This document provides information on recognizing and treating heat stroke as a first responder. It discusses the signs and symptoms of heat stroke as a core body temperature over 40°C and altered consciousness. Immediate first aid treatment is needed and includes removing the victim from heat, assessing responsiveness, calling for medical help, cooling the body by wetting skin and using fans, and rehydration if conscious. Proper prevention focuses on staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, gradual acclimation to heat, and maintaining a healthy weight. The document concludes that heat stroke can be life-threatening and first responders should follow the DRCAB protocol for initial management.

How to recognize and treat heat stroke as a first responder
SESSION OBJECTIVES what you will achieve in the next 20 minutes
By the end of this session, the participants
will be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat stroke correctly.
By the end of this session, the participants
will be able to perform the first aid management for heat stroke victims correctly. WHAT IS HEAT STROKE 1. Body’s inability to cope with heat 2. HEAT STROKE: Body temperature > 40C Decrease/altered of consciousness 3. H eatexhaustion HEAT STROKE DEATH 4. Immediate and proper treatment should be initiated pre-hospitally. HOW TO RECOGNIZE PERSON SUFFERING FROM HEAT STROKE 1. Core body temperature > 40C 2. Brain abnormalities: • Acting crazy (delirium) • Irritability • Dizziness • Seizure • Comma 3. Dry hot skin (+/- sweating) 4. Breathing shallow and fast 5. Fast and strong heart beat 6. Headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea HOW TO PREVENT HEAT STROKE
1. Stay hydrated (0.5 to 1 liter/hour).
Thirst is not an accurate indicator for dehydration. 2. Wear light-colored lightweight clothing 3. Acclimatize and avoid fatigue 4. Maintain ideal body weight HOW TO MANAGE HEAT STROKE 1. Always start with DRCAB • Remove from heat • Check response • Call medical emergency team • C-A-B 2. Remove victim’s restrictive clothing 3. Body cooling • Water spray/sponge, wrap in cool wet sheet, put in cool bath if victim is conscious • Fan the person once they are wet • Place ice packs on neck, groin, and armpit 4. Rehydration • Offer drinks if the victim is conscious 5. Measure temperature every 10 minutes • Target temperature: 39C 6. Monitor the breathing PRACTICE CONCLUSION 1. Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat-related illness and sometimes lead to death. 2. Heat stroke happens when body fails to cope with heat exposure. 3. Signs and symptoms of heat stroke are: temperature >40C , /decrease/altered of consciousness, hot and dry skin. 4. Firstaid:m anagem entofheatstroke includes: D RCA B , m ove , victim aw ay from heat, rem ove clothing, body cooling, rehydration, and monitoring. QUIZ ANSWER a. Give acetaminophen 1.
