• Information, Education, Communication or “IEC”
refers to a public health approach aiming at changing or
reinforcing health-related behaviors in a target audience,
concerning a specific problem and within a pre-defined

A. Locale Driven IEC
• 1. Principles of IEC
These principles provide a framework of experience which
can guide the development of comprehensive IEC
programs:
• policy and resource assessment
• audience analysis
• strategy design
• message research and pretesting
• participation and feedback
• Management
• Evaluation
• collaboration

• 2. Steps in local Driven IEC:

• Conduct a needs assessment.

• Set the goal.
• Establish behavioural objectives that will contribute to
achieving the goal.
• Develop the IEC activities and involve as many other
partners as possible.
• Identify potential barriers and ways of overcoming them.
• Identify potential partners, resources, and other forms of
support for your activities and gain their sustained
commitment.
• Establish an evaluation plan.

• 3. Advocacy
- The advocacy activities include programs to gain the support of
lawmakers and policymakers, the mass media and other
influential groups. IEC activities, on the other hand, reach out to
the youth, counselors, teachers and trainers, extension workers
and motivators, and health personnel.

- Advocacy and IEC also differ in strategies.

Advocacy Strategies: Political lobbying, high level meetings,
seminars, mass media campaigns, advocacy skills…

IEC Strategies: individual counseling, research,

non-governmental organization involvement in commu-
nities, youth camps…

B. Training design - Developing a training (IEC)

• Training design is developing new training and

educational courses and lessons for your existing
employees. It roots out the gaps in training and fills them
in with new material for better performance. It also allows
your team to grow their skills rather than becoming static
in their roles.

C. Basic Biostatistics - (Tables, Graphs
and Chart-Rates and Ratio Proportion)
• Biostatistics can be defined as the application of the
mathematical tools used in statistics to the fields of
biological sciences and medicine. Biostatistics is a
growing field with applications in many areas of biology
including epidemiology, medical sciences, health
sciences, educational research and environmental
sciences.

D. Principles of Disease Surveillance-
Steps in Outbreak Investigation
• Reporting
• Data accumulation
• Data analysis
• Judgment and action

If any of these steps break down or is unavailable, you will not have
usable information with which to take the appropriate
(and sometimes necessary) public health action.
