Light Fidelity: Li-Fi

(The future of Internet)

INTRODUCTION
 Li-Fi is a technology that uses the light emitting diode to transmit
the data wirelessly
 It uses light instead of radio waves to transmit information
 Li-Fi is the fast and cheap version of Wi-Fi based on visible light
communication
 Instead of Wi-Fi modems, Li-Fi would use transceiver-fitted LED
lamps that can light a room as well as transmit and receive
information
WHAT IS LI-FI?
 LIFI – Light Fideality
 Li-Fi is the transmission of data through illumination by taking the
fiber out of fiber optics by sending data through a LED light bulb
 Li-Fi data is transmitted by the LED bulbs and received by
photoreceptors
 This varies in intensity faster than human eye can follow
HISTORY
 Li-Fi was discovered in 1997 and created by Harald
Haas
 In October 2011, companies and industries groups
formed Li-Fi
 By augest 2013,data rates of over 1.6 gb/s were
demonstrated over a single colour LED
 In October 2013, it is reported Chinese manufactures
were working on Li-Fi development kits

WHAT IS EXISTING ?
 Wifi is the existing technology used greatly
 Wi-Fi is a wireless technology that uses frequency to transmit data through the air
 It allows you to use your computer or other devices to connect to the internet from
anywhere there is a Wi-Fi access point(hotspot)
DISADVANTAGES OF
WI-FI
 With the increased use of wi-fi ,the existing radio frequency is
getting blocked slowly and simultaneously, there is an increased
number of people who want to connect to internet
 Wireless ratio frequencies are getting higher , complexities are
increasing and RF interferences continue to grow
OVERCOMING OF
DISADVANTAGES
 Li-Fi technology helps us to overcome the interference problems
 Li-Fi uses the Visible Light Communication(VLC)
 Visible Light Communication is the data Communication medium which uses
visible light between 400 and 800 Thz(780nm-375nm).
 VLC is the subnet of optical wireless communication technologies
 It uses LEDs for up to 500Mbits/s
CONSTRUCTION
The Li-Fi chip consist of 4 primary sub-assemblies:
 Bulb
 RF Power Amplifier Circuit(PA)
 Printed Circuit Board(PCB)
 Enclosure
HOW DOES IT WORKS?
 Data from the internet and the local network is used to modulate the
intensity of the LED light source in a way undetectable to human eye
 The photodetector picks up the signal , which is converted back into a data
stream and sent to the client
 The client can communicate through its own LED output or over the existing
network
OPERATIONAL PROCEDURE
 Operational procedure is very simple, if the LED is ON, you transmit a
digit 1,if its OFF you transmit 0.
 The LED’s can be switched on and off very quicly , to transmit data
 Flicker depending upon the data we want to encode
 Thus every light source will works as a hub for data transmission
Li-Fi USAGE IN OFFICE
MODULATION TECHNIQUE
Since Li-Fi uses visible light to send data ,we need to modulate
 OFDM- Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing
 OOK- ON Off Keying
 PWM-Pulse Position
 PPM-Pulse Position Modulation
ADVANTAGES OF LIFI
 High data transmission rate of up to 10Gps can be achieved .
 Since light cannot penetrate walls ,it provides privacy and security that Wi-Fi
cannot
 Li-Fi has low implementation and maintance costs
 Transmission of data is fast and easy
 Energy saving(8W LED bulb = 60W ordinary bulb
COMPARISION BETWEEN Li-Fi &Wi-Fi
APPLICATION
 Education system
 Medical application
 Disaster management
 Radio broadcast
CONCLUSION
The concept of Li-Fi is currently attracting a great deal
of interest , not least because it may offer a genuine
and efficient alternative to radio based wirelessThus, if
Li-Fi technology can be put into practical use, every
bulb can be used as an alternative to Wi-Fi hotspotIt
provides simple, fast and efficient wireless data
communication . So Li-Fi as a bright future
