DENSITY MEASUREMENT

High Density
• Particles are packed together tightly
• Not much space between
• Will sink easily
Low Density
• Part are loosely packed together
• more space between
• Will float more easily
Density
• mass of a substance per unit volume
• p= m/V
• m is the mass (is the quantity of matter in a given sample
substance)
• V is the volume (amount of space occupied by a
substance
• Units for p are: gram per cubic centimeter, gram per
millilitre, kilograms per cubic meter
• 1g/cm3 = 1g/mL = 100kg/m3
• D=M/V

M=DV

V=M/D
Practice Exercises

• p= 5.49 g/mL, V=36mL

Practice Exercise

m=17g, V=23mL
Practice Exercise

m=38g, p=3.18g/mL
Practice Exercise

p=1.01g/mL, V=10mL
Practice Exercise

m=25.4g, V=29.8mL
