HISTORY OF PAINTING
• The term ‘ history painting ’ was introduced by the French Royal Academy in the seventeenth century. It was seen as the
most important type ( or ‘genre’), of painting above portraiture, the depiction of scenes from daily life (called genre
painting), landscape and still life painting.
• Although initially used to describe paintings with subjects drawn from ancient Greek and Roman (classical) history,
classical mythology, and the Bible; towards the end of the eighteenth century history painting included modern
historical subjects such as the battle scenes painted by artists Benjamin West and John Singleton Copley.
• The style considered appreciate to use for history painting was classical and idealized known overall as High Art.

His Last Supper (1495-1948) and Mona Lisa (c. 1503-1519) are among the most widely popular and influential
paintings of the Renaissance.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF LEONARDO
Some of Van Gogh’s most famous works include “Starry Night,” “Irises,” and “Sunflowers.” In a moment of
instalibity, Vincent Van Gogh cut off his ear and offered it to a prostitute. Van Gogh died in France at age 37 from a
self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Dutch Baroque painter and printmaker, one of the greatest storytellers in the history of art. Rembrandt is also known
as a painter of light and shade and as an artist who favoured an uncompromising realism that would lead some
critics to claim that he preffered ugliness to beauty.
