HISTORY OF PAINTING

• The term ‘ history painting ’ was introduced by the French Royal Academy in the seventeenth century. It was seen as the
most important type ( or ‘genre’), of painting above portraiture, the depiction of scenes from daily life (called genre
painting), landscape and still life painting.
• Although initially used to describe paintings with subjects drawn from ancient Greek and Roman (classical) history,
classical mythology, and the Bible; towards the end of the eighteenth century history painting included modern
historical subjects such as the battle scenes painted by artists Benjamin West and John Singleton Copley.
• The style considered appreciate to use for history painting was classical and idealized known overall as High Art.
1.) LEONARDO DA VINCI

• Born: April 15, 1452


• Died: May 2, 1519 (aged 67)
• Notable Works: “Virgin and Child with St. Anne”
• Movement/ style: Early Renaissance
• Subjects of study: anatomy

His Last Supper (1495-1948) and Mona Lisa (c. 1503-1519) are among the most widely popular and influential
paintings of the Renaissance.

2.) VINCENT VAN GOGH

• Born: March 30, 1853


• Died: July 29,1890

Some of Van Gogh’s most famous works include “Starry Night,” “Irises,” and “Sunflowers.” In a moment of
instalibity, Vincent Van Gogh cut off his ear and offered it to a prostitute. Van Gogh died in France at age 37 from a
self-inflicted gunshot wound.

• Died: October 4, 1669

Dutch Baroque painter and printmaker, one of the greatest storytellers in the history of art. Rembrandt is also known
as a painter of light and shade and as an artist who favoured an uncompromising realism that would lead some
critics to claim that he preffered ugliness to beauty.

• Born: November 14, 1840 Paris, France


• Died: December 05, 1926 (aged 86) Giverny, France
• Nationality: French
• Known for: Painting
• Notable work: Impression, Sunrise Rouen Cathedral series, London Parliament series, Water Lilies, Haystacks,
Poplars, List of paintings
• Movement: Impressionism
• Patron(s): Gustave Caillebotte, Ernest Hoschede, Georges Clemenceau.
• These artists have influenced generations of young artists worldwide and even
since there time. Today we can see their impact in painting, in poetry, in song
and in video. We are happy to share examples of art that were influenced by
them.

• Tragically, they died not knowing the acclaim on their art would receive.
• Today their legacy is immortal, and they will be forever known as some of the
greatest artists.
