STADIUM LIGHTING

Presented by : Sankalp,Sonam,Supal,Shilpa,Vivek,Ira
Introduction
Stadium lighting must be designed with several perspectives
simultaneously in mind.
• Players should have clear visibility without pockets of shadow or
blinding glare in their eyes.
• Spectators must also be able to look down from the bleachers and
see an evenly-lit field where colors and movement are clearly visible
• Dark Sky laws that strictly prohibit light spillage into surrounding
neighborhoods to be followed.
• Skill level of the players
• Number of Spectators.
• Number of Events simultaneously being held in the facility
Classifications
There are generally two classifications out of the industry standard
four
: Class 2 Stadium Lighting and Class 3 Stadium Lighting.
• Class 2 stadium lighting involves illuminating a field for up to
5,000 spectators.
• Class 3 stadium lighting involves lighting stadiums for much
smaller crowds, such as those seen at school competitions and
local amateur league games.

Stadium lighting basically consists of three levels of

intensity
• Game day: 125 foot-candles
• Practices: 60 foot-candles
• Security and maintenance: 20 foot-candles
Floodlighting
• Floodlights are broad-beamed, high-intensity artificial lights often used
to illuminate outdoor playing fields while an outdoor sports event is being
held during low-light conditions.
• Some sports grounds which do not have permanent floodlights installed
may use portable temporary floodlights.
• Many larger floodlights will have gantries for bulb changing and
maintenance, which accommodate maximum 2 engineers.
• The most common type of floodlight is the Metal Halide which emits a
bright white light, however most commonly used for sporting events are
High pressure Sodium floodlights which emit a soft orange light; SON
lamps have a very high lumens-to-watt ratio making them a cost effective
choice where certain lux levels have to be met.
LIGHTING PATTERN INSIDE STADIUM

• Before lighting • After lighting

• Light rays are traced to each grid on the field.
• light fixtures illuminating the playing field would be mounted at the new press
box in a horizontal array.
• Min. four poles are proposed with fixtures in a vertical array, approximately
• 120–130 feet above the playing field, comparable to the height of the
• temporary lighting system now used for televised games.
ILLUMINATION VALUE ACCORDING TO FIFA VALUE
QUALITY OF LIGHTING

• UNIFORMITY

• GLARE RATING

• COLOUR TEMPERATURE

• COLOUR RENDERING

• ILLUMINANCE VALUE
UNIFORMITY
COEFFICIENT OF AVG. UNIFORMITY [U2] – MINIMUM/AVERAGE
COEFFICIENT OF MAXIMUM UNIFORMITY [U1] – MINIMUM/MAX
GLARE RATING
Working to prevent the light pollution
Glare rating [GR] =10 => barely visible
Glare rating [GR] = 90=> unbearable
Glare rating <50 max. rating suitable for football match
GLARE RATING MEASUREMENTS
LIGHT POLLUTION

•Artificial lighting by professional fixtures can

reduce spill lighting and excessive brightness in
the normal field of view for pedestrians and
motorists outside the stadium

• Consequences of light pollution

1. waste energy
2. troublesome visual
3. troublesome visual for drivers and some
professionals observers.

STADIUM LIGHTING AND POWER SUPPLY

A lighting system must be installed which meets the needs of broadcasters,

spectators, players and officials without spilling light into the environment
and without creating a nuisance for the local community.
 Facility requirements
 Competition categories
 Mounting height of light
fittings
 Camera views to be
considered
 Player and broadcast
view angles
 Installation – televised
 Installation – non
televised
FACILITY REQUIREMENTS

Illuminate the event to digital video quality for the media without creating nuisance
glare for the players/officials and adding spill light/glare to the spectators and
surrounding environment.

Permanent lighting, temporary lighting and a combination of both systems should be

considered.
Environmental limit the spill light and glare off the field
Players and The players and officials must be able to perform to
officials their fullest ability
Spectators able to view the event, scoreboard, video and all
activities on the field in comfort
The media video and broadcasts shall be of digital quality
COMPETITION CATEGORIES
Televised Event pitch shall be shadow free/glare free
Non-televised Event pitch shall be glare free with a minimum of eight poles

MOUNTING HEIGHT OF LIGHT FITTINGS

CAMERA VIEWS TO BE CONSIDERED
The principal goal of the lighting system is to ensure symmetrical lighting. Both
fixed and field cameras can be added without affecting the digital video quality.
PLAYER AND BROADCAST
VIEW ANGLES
Corner goal-line area:
lighting equipment shall not be
placed within an area of 15
degrees on either side of the
goal line.

Behind the goal line:

lighting equipment shall not be
placed within 20 degrees behind
the goal line and 45 degrees
above the horizon from the goal
line.
INSTALLATION – TELEVISED
Multi-zone aiming is
the repetitive aiming
from different head
frame locations at
similar locations on
the pitch.

The aiming for each

zone shall have a
minimum of four
overlapping lighting
arrays per side
INSTALLATION – NON TELEVISED

For international and national televised events, the lighting head

frames are positioned on the stadium for digital video quality
lighting. Multi-zone aiming is not required for a non-televised pitch.
