FOUR KINDS OF
LEGAL RIGHTS
 CIVIL RIGHTS
ex. Right to live with freedom and equality

 POLITICAL RIGHTS
- Right to share in political process
ex. Right to vote, right to hold public office

* Both civil and political rights protect individuals

from state power and unjustified intervention in
their lives. They ensure that individuals can live
safely within society and participate in public life.
 ECONOMIC RIGHTS
- Provides for economic security
ex. Right to work, right for gainful employment
 SOCIAL RIGHTS
- Provides for satisfaction of social
needs ex. Equitable health system,
education

* Both economic and social rights guarantee that

every individual is provided the conditions where
they are able to meet their basic economic and
social needs.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
LEGAL RIGHTS
1. They exist only in society and are products
of social living.
2. They are rightful claims of individuals for
their development, and of their society as
well.
3. They are rational and moral claims.
4. They are equally available to all the people.
5.Their concepts and content change over
time.
6.They are not absolute; laws prescribe
limitations to their enjoyment.
7.There are corresponding duties in the
enjoyment of these rights.
8.They need enforcement by the proper
authority.
PROBLEMS OF RIGHTS
- “The problem with rights is that one person’s
right is another person’s obligation.” (Carden,
2013)
- Boutros, (2018) identified that the lack of
effective enforcement of laws may be a problem
for individual’s “rights to their rights.”
A right, although legal, may nevertheless be
subject to abuse when such right is not exercised
according to the norms embodied in Article 19 of
the Civil Code. Some individuals may willingly
abuse their legal rights just for the purpose of
annoying, harming in anyway, another person. In
this case, the abuser is liable for the harm caused
by their actions.
