Cells Revision

Starter: Find the words in the word search.

Stretch: Answer the questions below using words from

the word search only.

1. An organ in the circulatory system.

2. An organ in the digestive system.
3. One of the seven life processes.
4. The part in the cell where energy is produced.
5. An organelle in a plant cell.
Learning Objectives
• Revise cells

• Look at cells.

• Practise exam questions.

Using a microscope

• Start on the lowest magnification

(the smallest objective lens)
• Don’t use the coarse adjustment knob
on high magnification…you’ll break the
slide!!!
• Place slide on stage and lock clips
• Adjust light source to make the image
bright enough to see
• Always focus upwards away from the
specimen- you can’t see where the
objective lens is and you don’t want to
ram it through the specimen
What do they really look like?

1. You will now use a microscope to look at

cells close up!
2. Draw what you can see in your book.
3. Label what you can see.

STRETCH: how do cells make up a body, write your ideas in

your book

STRETCHIER: look up some images of cells on your ipad,

why do different cells with different jobs look
different, can you give some examples?
Respiration
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp0o19gWX7E

1. Is respiration a chemical or physical reaction? Chemical

2. What does aerobic respiration use? Oxygen and glucose

3. What does aerobic respiration produce?

Carbon dioxide & water
4. Write the word equation for respiration.

Oxygen
5. __________ Glucose
+ ___________ 
____________
Water + ___________
Energy + _________
Carbon dioxide

6. Name two types of organisms that respire.

Plants and
animals
TASK: Rearrange the steps below to show how respiration
releases energy. Use the cartoon strip to help you.
A. Broken down food is absorbed by the blood.
B. Glucose gives you energy.
C. Food is broken down into molecules.
D. Absorbed food is converted into glucose during
respiration.

Make your own cartoon strip of how you think we get

energy from the food we eat.

Question 1
Mark your work in green pens.
ii)     What substance must move from the
blood to the cells lining the stomach so that
respiration can take place?
Draw a ring around the correct answer.

  Answer: glucose

Question 2
Q2.The image below shows some muscle cells from the
wall of the stomach, as seen through a light microscope.
(a)     Describe the function of muscle cells in the wall
of the stomach.
They contract to move food (by peristalsis)

(b)     Figure above is highly magnified.
The scale bar in Figure above represents 0.1 mm.
Use a ruler to measure the length of the scale bar and
then calculate the magnification of Figure above.

(2)(c)     The muscle cells in Figure above contain many

mitochondria.
What is the function of mitochondria?
.........................................................................................................
to provide/ transfer energy for use from glucose

(or from aerobic respiration)
(d)     The muscle cells also contain many ribosomes. The
ribosomes cannot be seen in Figure above.
(i)      What is the function of a ribosome?

to make protein/ enzyme

(ii)     Suggest why the ribosomes cannot be seen

through a light microscope.

KEYWORD BINGO
Write down THREE words from the list below. Write down
the number corresponding to the word.

1. Plant cell

2. Vacuole

3. Nucleus

4. Cytoplasm

5. Cell membrane

6. Microscope
This part of the cell contains the genetic information
and controls the reactions inside the cell. It is like the
board room of a factory. 3. Nucleus.

The part of the cell that controls what goes in and out
of the cell. It is similar to the walls and gates of a
factory 5. Cell membrane
The apparatus that can be used to look at cells.
6. Microscope
This is one type of cell. 1. Plant cell

This keeps a plant cell firm. 2. vacuole

This is where reactions happen in a cell. 4. Cytoplasm
