What is a verb?

Verbs
• A verb is one of the most important parts of the
sentence.
• It tells the subject’s actions, events, or state of
being.

Example:
• The director squished his nose.
• The director is squishing his nose.
• His nose was squished.
Types of Verbs

Action Verbs
• The action verb tells what its subject does.
• The action can either by physical or mental.

Physical action: The farmer feeds the chickens.


Mental action: He likes the red rooster best.
Example of Action verbs:

• ran
• coughed
• swallowed
• ride
• awake
• sang

Tenses of the (Action)
Verbs
Present tense
• An action verb that describes an action that is happening now is called
a present tense verb.

Example: The bird flies through the sky.


**Flies is a present tense verb because it is happening right now.

• Many present tense verbs end with s, but some end with es, or ies.

Example: sleeps, walks, splashes, crashes, plays, cries, lies


Use the present tense to express:

• Verb which tell about actions which happened some time ago are past
tense verbs.

**Wanted is past tense verb because the action has already happened.

• Many past tense verbs end with ed, but some end with d, or ied.

Example: walked, splashed, crashed, played, tried, cried, lied


Future tense
• Verb which tell about actions which are going to happen are future
tense verbs

Example: She will go to the mall.


**Will go is future tense verb because the action has not happened yet.

• Future tense verbs use special words to talk about things that will
happen: will, going to, shall, aim to, etc.

Example: will enjoy, going to the mall, shall email

Linking Verbs
Linking Verb

• A linking verb connects the subject of a sentence with a word that


gives information about the subject, such as a condition or
relationship.

- There are nine common linking verbs:


**am, are, be, being, become, is, seem, was, were,

• To remember these linking verbs, use this saying:

All boys in school work. (A, B, I, S, W)

Helping Verbs
Helping Verb

• One special category of verbs are helping verbs, also called "auxiliary
verbs.“

• These verbs do not mean anything on their own.

• They just "help" the main verbs to express their full meanings, and
are necessary for grammatical structure of a sentence.

• A helping verb does not show action. Instead, it helps another verb
show action.

Examples:

1. The school bus had broken down this morning! (had, a form of have,
is the helping verb, broken is the main verb)

2. The students were walking to school when another bus picked them
up. (were, a form of be, is the helping verb, walking/picked is the main
verb)

3. They should have just waited at the bus stop. (Both should and have
are helping verbs, and waited is the main verb)

5. The squirrels have eaten some nuts. (have helps the main verb eaten

• Use has with singular subjects.

Example:
Jeremy has talent.

• Use has with the pronouns she, he, and it.

Example:
She/He/It has talent.

• Use have with the pronouns I, you, we, and they.

Example:
