projects. The Institution of Civil
Engineers defines “sustainability”
as meeting the needs of today
without compromising those of
tomorrow.
● Sustainability is important for
civil engineering because
sustainable design saves
energy, water, and minimizes
damage to the environment.

• It is the ability to maintain at a certain rate or level.
• According to American Society of Civil Engineers,
sustainability is a set of economic, environmental, and
social conditions in which all of society has the capacity
and opportunity to maintain and improve its quality of life
indefinitely, without degrading the quantity, quality, or the
availability of natural, economic, and social resources.
For example, is the Sustainable building or what we call
“Green Building” which will be discussed on the latter
part of the report.

efficient and support human and natural environments. A closed-hoop
human ecosystem can be used to illustrate the many activities of engineers
that support sustainable development. A closed-hoop human ecosystem
means a business that reuse the same materials repeatedly to create new
products for purchase.

• Balance infrastructure needs with environmental protection to enhance the

quality of life in present and future generation.
