Technology-Based Art

Part II
Digital Photography
▪ Just point the camera and shoot. Gone are the days when
cameras had so many confusing dials that you don't
know what to touch first. The generation of
photographers who grew up in today's digital world
holds the belief that photography is easier than making a
painting and almost as flexible as a sheet of paper.
▪ Two innovations in image capture helped make this
belief fairly true: the point and-shoot and DSLR
(Digital Single-lens Reflex) cameras.

What are some of
the basics of
learning digital

Basic Concepts of Digital Photography
1. Train on the use of the digital camera
When a photographer holds a digital camera, he or she may
be confused and even intimidated by all of its modes and
settings. One of the best ways to gain understanding on
digital photography basics is to take the time to look over
the camera's user guide to learn what each icon or setting is
and the purpose of those modes.
For example, the photographer should be
familiar with the following:
▪ The camera's metering modes are for calculating the
proper lighting and exposure. ISO settings refer to the
camera's sensitivity to light.
The shutter is a part of
the camera that
regulates the length of
time or exposure that
light is allowed to fall on
a digital camera sensor.
The faster the subject is
moving, the faster the
shutter speed should be.
▪ The aperture, also
referred to as f/stop, is
the setting that
controls the size of
the opening of the
lens that allows light Place your screenshot here

into the camera. The

smaller the aperture
number, the larger the
opening.
Another important thing to learn in photography is the picture's
depth of field or the area of the image that appears sharp. A
large f-number, such as f/32, (which means a smaller aperture)
will bring both foreground and background objects in focus. On
the other hand, a small f-number, such as f/1.4, will isolate the
foreground from the background (which makes the foreground
objects sharp and the background blurry)
2. Proper handling of digital camera
One key to achieve quality photos
starts in the way the photographer
uses and handles the digital
camera. Always ensure a steady
camera before taking any shot.
Oftentimes, digital cameras result
to blurred photographs if the hands
quiver a little. Getting a tripod or
using any improvised but steady
platform will surely help in taking
great photos.
3. Pay attention to the subject
Making pleasing pictures has to do
with composing or working on the
frame, and knowing how the rule of
thirds' works. Avoid placing your
object at the intersection of thirds, as
it may result to dead center image.
Imagine the shot screen divided into
9. The main points of interest are
more interesting and pleasing If the
elements are placed on these lines or
junction points.
Rule of Thirds
4. Capture photos from unique angles
Great pictures are taken in many ways. One way has to
do with how the camera is handled and moved, including
the amount of subjects contained within the frame, how far
the camera is from the subjects and the perspective the
viewer. Hence, the photographer's visual technique
involves camera work--the kind of camera placement,
movement focus, and timing. He or she may choose to
make these shots from a wide array of techniques, or
other kinds and combinations of shots.
Tilt shot
is a shot in which the camera
angle is deliberately slanted
to one side. This is commonly
for dramatic effects and to
portray feelings of
uneasiness, disorientation,
intoxication, etc.
A framing shot focuses on the image
where you the photographer, want it.
A soft focus shot is a
shot that gives the
appearance of blurring
while retaining sharp
edges. It is used as an
effect to eliminate
blemishes, and, in
general produces a
dreamlike image.
A backlighting shot refers to a shot where the source
of the light used to expose the film comes from behind
the subject.
An eye-level shot is where you are in the
same height and angle as the subject.
A panning shot refers to where the camera follows the
subject from left to right or right to left, blurring the
backgrounds, and shows speed.
A freeze-frame shot captures fast movement using
ordinary camera or video gear. This shot reveals
Interesting structures not visible to the naked eye.
A high-angle shot looks down on the subject.
A bird's eyeshot is an elevated view of an
object from above, with a perspective as though
the observer were a bird.
A zoom shot is where the camera
moves in on the subject.
A close-up or macro shot helps you see
really close to the subject.
A wide-angle or panoramic shot makes for
some amazing shots that capture a sweeping
view of your subject.
5. Be active

Find out how else the camera can make pictures
according to plan. Try creative shots. Keep watch on the
ever-changing activity in the street, market park, etc.
Absorb as much knowledge as you can in reading
photography books, visiting camera stores, or observing
how professional photographers do their craft. Discover
how pictures unexpectedly present themselves. It will be
fun taking those once-in-a lifetime images!

6. Join a photography club

A photographer must not only learn through his or her
own experiences. Learning from others would also help
improve one's skills as a photographer. Consider joining
a photography workshop, club, or online class.

Becoming a professional digital photographer does not
happen overnight. Like the other things we aim to be in
life, it entails focus, resourcefulness, and perseverance
to be a good photographer.
