Overview of Wireless
Communications

 Communication is one of the integral parts of science that has

always been a focus point for exchanging information among
parties at locations physically apart
 In the last few years, telecommunication industry has been
growing explosively.
 The beginning of modern telecommunication was marked
by the invention of telegraph in the eighteenth century.
Wireless Communication..?

 Wireless communication is a broad term that incorporates all

procedures and forms of connecting and communicating
between two or more devices using a wireless signal through
wireless communication technologies and devices.
Wireless Communication vs Wireless Networks

 A wireless network is a computer network that uses wireless data

connections between network nodes.
 Wireless networking is a method by which homes,
telecommunications networks and business installations avoid the
costly process of introducing cables into a building, or as a
connection between various equipment locations
 Types of wireless networks
 Wireless PAN
 Wireless LAN
 Wireless ad hoc network
 Wireless MAN
 Wireless WAN
Wireless Communication Vs Mobile Communication

 Mobile communication allows transmission of

voice and multimedia data via a computer or a
mobile device without having connected to
any physical or fixed link.
 Mobile communication is the exchange of
voice and data using a communication
infrastructure at the same time regardless of
any physical link.
Advantages of Wireless Communication

 Mobility: Because radio waves travel freely through the air,

wireless modes of communication give you a great deal of mobility.
 Convenience: Wireless devices have no cables to connect; if the
signal has sufficient strength, the device will work.
 Flexibility: As wireless frequency penetrates the walls, wireless
networks are easy to install anywhere based on choice.
 Lower Cost: Wireless communications networks are less
expensive to install and maintain than equivalent wired systems.
Disadvantages of Wireless Communication

 Wireless signals can be easily hacked and hence it will hamper

privacy.
 The earlier wireless networks were slower. Now-a-days wireless
LANs with advanced standards such as IEEE 802.11ac and
802.11ad are available which provides same performance as
traditional Ethernet based LANs.
 Wireless networks require careful radio frequency planning at
the beginning of the installation.
 Wireless communication is subject to interference. There are
various receiver techniques and modulation techniques which
make wireless system robust against any kind of interference.
Overview of Wireless
Communications
According to World Bank Vice President for Sustainable
Development Rachel Kyte.

 Mobile communication offer major opportunities to

advance human and economic development.
 The challenge:
 How to enable people, businesses, and governments in
developing countries to develop their own locally-relevant
mobile applications so they can take full advantage of these
opportunities.”.
Overview of Wireless
Communications

 According to Tim Kelly, Lead ICT Policy Specialist at the

World Bank
 “The mobile revolution is right at the start of its growth
curve: mobile devices are becoming cheaper and more
powerful while networks are doubling in bandwidth
roughly every 18 months and expanding into rural areas,” .

To what extent is this statement true???

Evolution of Mobile Radio Communications

Discuss the history of Wireless Communication.

Evolution of Mobile Radio Communications
Mobile Communication in Tanzania

 The telecoms infrastructure sectors are the fastest

growing sectors in Tanzania.
 It is the second largest telecoms market in East Africa,
behind Kenya
 With teledensity over 40% in September 2012, representing
a subscriber base of more than 16.2 million people.
 The driver of this phenomenal growth has been the mobile
sector.
Mobile Communication in Tanzania

 The five most important telecoms companies in

Tanzania include:
 Bharti Airtel Tanzania.
 MIC Tanzania Limited (‘tiGO’).
 Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited
(‘TTCL’).
 Vodacom Tanzania Limited.
 Zanzibar Telecom Company (‘ZANTEL’) a part of Etisalat
of the United Arab Emirates.

In telecommunications, 5G is the fifth generation

technology standard for broadband cellular networks,
which cellular phone companies began deploying
worldwide in 2019, and is the planned successor to the 4G
networks which provide connectivity to most current
cellphones
The mobile networks are becoming the country’s leading
internet service providers.
