ODD

Introduction
An optical disc drive (ODD) is a disk drive that
uses laser light or electromagnetic waves as part of
the process of reading or writing data to or from
optical

can work with multiple types of discs will
therefore contain multiple lasers. The mechanism to
read and write data consists of a laser, a lens to guide
the laser beam, and photodiodes to detect the light
reflection from the disc.

Some drives can only read from certain discs, but

recent drives can both read and record, also called
burners or writers.

Types of CD Drives :

3.

CD-RW Drive
 CD-ROM drive – Reads data from a CD.
 CD-R drive – Reads data from CD and can also write to CD .
 CD-RW drive – Read , write and Rewrite.

 The speed of CD drive specifies the amount of data the CD drive reads
from the CD called as Transfer Speed .
• Speed of CD drive = 150kbps.
“X”- Specifies the number of times the original speed of CD drive
must be multiplied with , to attach the speed of CD drive.

Ex :- 52X = 52x150=93,600 kbps.

Some time we find a specification as 52x/48x/52x which refers to

Write/Rewrite/Read .
CD (COMPACT DRIVE ) :

Storage device used to store and distribute various forms of data

such as software, music, movies and applications CD are of two
types . First an 12cm CD and 8 cm . An 12cm cd can store data
upto 700 MB whereas the 8cm can only store an 80% Data of
12cm cd. Both of them have an 1.5 cm hole in the middle which
is the size of a 5 rupee coin . This is an cheap an reliable media
this is used to read and write data from or to a cd drive.

DVD Drive :

DVD Driven can different types of DVD’s. It can also accept an CD

to read and write. The structure of DVD is differentiated as front
panel and back panel .
Front panel as an tray which accepts DVD . An eject button used
to open an close the tray. The light indication of the CD or DVD
status is also located in front panel.
The back panel has ports to connecting the DVD drive to the
computer . It has an power, jumpers and IDE/SATA connectors.
Speed of DVD drive can have two to three speed.

For example:- 1. “ 4x/24x ”

4x- max speed at which data is read from DVD.
2x- max speed at which data is read from CD.

2. “ 16x/6x/16x ”
DVD- R write speed 16x
DVD- RW write speed 6x
DVD read speed 16x

[ NOTE : 1x=1352.54 KB/S ]

DVD ( Digital versatile/video disc )

DVD is a digital storage disc used to store music , video games ,

multimedia applications. DVD is similar to CD in appearance and
structure. It offers higher capacity and better quality as compared to CD.
A DVD can store 4.7 GB of data.
A DVD drive is required to read or write data from or to a DVD.

Blu-ray Disc Drive

The is a player used to play only Blu-ray disc. It

was developed by Blu-ray
association, consumer electronics and media
manufactures.
Blu-ray disc enables to record up to 25 GB of data or
up to 2 hour of high
definition video on a single sided.
It has single and double layer format and uses
industry standard MPEG-2
compression technology.
A single layered BD can store upto 25 GB and a
double to layered BD can
store upto 50 GB data.

Connecting an ODD to PC

To connect an ODD to PC we need an interface which is sub divided to:-

• Internal – IDE or SATA

• External – USB or Fire wire

These are physical connectors to computer from ODD.

Few steps to be followed to connect an ODD to PC.

They are as follows -
• Jumpers setting s
• Connecting the cables properly
• Detecting ODD through Bios
• The setting should be manually checked before and after
connecting an ODD .if this all fails the problem is with ODD
so, have to replace it. Jumper setting to be put in master
before connecting to PC. Bios have to be set in default if
ODD not detected
