Elephants are widely regarded to be among the most intelligent and
fascinating creatures in the world who do a lot of human-esque
activities. They grieve their dead, they have tight communal bonds
with their young, can paint self-portraits, and they’ve even been
known to guzzle down a little sauce here and there, too. “My
favorite thing about elephants is that they literally like getting
drunk,” Salmoni told The Post. “They’ll go a certain time of year in
Southern Africa when the marula tree starts to drop its fruits, and
then it starts to rot, and rotting then creates alcohol, and elephants
will literally defend their tree to get them drunk.” Scientific opinion
Elephants like to get varies on exactly why this marula fruit gets elephants and other
local animals so tossed — in-tummy fermentation is another theory
drunk — but marula fruit parties are a very real and hilarious thing, so
cheers!

“There are a lot of primates that partner with dogs and
cats. There’s actually a really fun famous story, in
Zambia, where a female lioness who was removed from
the pride — either she or her cohort had eaten a mum
oryx, so she adopted this baby oryx and basically
protected it from other lions,” he said. Other famous
examples include a sperm whale who made besties with
a deformed bottlenose dolphin, a bullied monkey who

Whether it’s adopting other people’s babies or playing
mom to cats and dogs, a lot of humans like to take in
other living creatures, and that’s something our furry
friends do as well. In Miami’s Jungle Island, for
example, a chimp named Anjana famously assumed a
motherly role for two white tiger cubs who’d been
displaced from their pride — bottle-feeding and playing
with them alongside her trainer — and Salmoni says

Although humans and animals (technically
“non-human animals”) may look different, at
a physiological and anatomical level they are
remarkably similar. Animals, from mice to
monkeys, have the same organs (heart, lungs,
brain etc.) and organ systems (respiratory,
cardiovascular, nervous systems etc.) which
perform the same functions in pretty much the
same way. The similarity means that nearly
90% of the veterinary medicines that are used
to treat animals are the same as, or very
similar to, those developed to treat human
patients. There are minor differences, but
these are far outweighed by the similarities.
Biological similarity of
The differences can give important clues
humans and other animals about diseases and how they might be treated
– for instance, if we knew why the mouse

heart, organ that serves as a pump
to circulate the blood. It may be a straight tube, as in
spiders and annelid worms, or a somewhat more
elaborate structure with one or more receiving
chambers (atria) and a main pumping chamber
(ventricle), as in mollusks. In fishes the heart is a
folded tube, with three or four enlarged areas that
correspond to the chambers in the mammalian heart. In
animals with lungs—amphibians, reptiles, birds, and
mammals—the heart shows various stages heart

A brain is an organ that serves as the
center of the nervous system in all
vertebrate and most
invertebrate animals. It is located in
the head, usually close to the sensory
organs for senses such as vision. It is
brain the most complex organ in a
vertebrate's body.
