RATING NORMS

Rating Systems
• IGBC. Indian Green Building Council
– Established in 2001 by CII.
– Gives ratings as Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
– Green Ratings for Villages, Residential Societies, Homes,
Existing buildings, Factories, Townships etc.
• TERI – GRIHA. The Energy and Resource Institute.
Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment.
– Ministry of New and Renewable energy.
– National Rating System. One, Two, Three, Four, Five star .
• LEED. Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design.
– Designed by the US GBC.
Basic Requirements of GBD
• Depends on the rating system
• LEED, IGBC, GRIHA, etc.....

• Fulfill a set of performance criteria

• Criteria address the environmental impacts
inherent during life-cycle of building

• Different levels of certifications awarded based

on total credits earned.
• Certification levels and score needed varies with
accreditation system
Types of Green Buildings
Certifications for
• New Construction
• Existing Building
• Homes
• Factories
• Township/Large Developments
• SEZ
• Landscape
• Healthcare
• Commercial interior,.......
GRIHA
• Endorsed by the Ministry of New and Renewable
Energy, Government of India.
• A five star rating system.
• The rating applies to new building stock – commercial,
institutional, and residential – of varied functions.
• Emphasis on passive solar techniques for optimizing
indoor visual and thermal comfort.
• Encourages optimization of building design to reduce
conventional energy demand and further optimize
energy performance of the building within specified
comfort limits.
GRIHA
• A building is assessed on its predicted performance
over its entire life cycle from inception through
operation.
• Encourages the use of refrigeration-based and energy-
demanding air conditioning systems only in cases of
extreme thermal discomfort.
• GRIHA integrates all relevant Indian codes and
standards for buildings and acts as a tool to facilitate
implementation of the same.
• Is a voluntary scheme.
• GRIHA has been adopted as a NRS (national rating
system) under the MNRE, Government of India.
