TYPES AND PARTS OF THE COMPUTER
WHAT IS COMPUTER?
COMPUTER
 derived from the Latin word compute, which means to calculate.

 Is an electronic devices that can be used to process and

manipulate data or information.
 defined as a fast electronic device that processes the input data
according to the instructions given by the programmer/user and
provides the desired information as output.
 – Accepts data – Manipulates data – Produces results – Stores results
DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMPUTER
 ANALOG
Computers that represent and store data in continuously varying
-

physical quantities such as current, voltage or frequency.

 DIGITAL
-Digital computers are mainly general-purpose computers that

represent and store data in discrete quantities or numbers. In these

computers, all processing is done in terms of numeric representation
(Binary Digits) of data and information.
 HYBRID
incorporate the technology of both analog and digital computers.

MAJOR ELEMENTS OF COMPUTER SYSTEM
 HARDWARE
-Is the physical components of computer such as
input devices, storage devices and output devices.

 SOFTWARE

-Is the program installed in the computer system to make

the computer works. There are two kinds of software:
1. System Software
2. Application Software
COMPUTER HARDWARE
- Refers to the physical and mechanical
components of a computer

- It consists of devices such as circuits boards,

chips, monitors, disks, disks drives, modems,
keyboard and printers.
Ex. Trackballs, touch pad,
Can be built into the computer, like the joysticks, light pen, game
controllers, scanner barcode
keyboard in a laptop, or it can be connected readers, video and digital
INPUT to the computer by a cable.
cameras, microphone and so
on

Ex. RAM Refers to the ability

Random-Access of computers to
memory, Hard
Disk, USB Flash
STORAGE store and retain data
Drive, Optical Disc in memory.
Computers not only remember
information, but also process PROCESS
data.
We can feed instructions to computers, there are also
Ex. monitor,
ways for computers to communicate to the outside
world, beginning with you. OUTPUT speakers
and printers.

Functions of Hardware
It is use to hold all the
other components together
and protect the

elements

SYSTEM UNIT
MONITOR
•screen that displays what is
going on in the computer

Mouse
let you feed instructions to the computer
by simply pointing and clicking in a
graphical environment.

Keyboard
main input device for most computers
• Motherboard– main circuit have a direct
or indirect connection to the
motherboard.

• Main Memory/RAM – allows

computers to store and retain
information

• System Case – casing

Processor– brain of the computer that
handles the flow of all data.

Floppy Disk Drive– perhaps the

slowest form of long term-
secondary storage for the
computer is floppy disk with 1.44
MB disk drive.

Hard disk – storage device that holds the

operating system and other programs
Video/ Graphics Card– onboard video chipsets
which should be enough for most users.
- Use in graphics-intensive applications such as
playing video games, editing pictures and movies
and etc.

• Sound Card – converts data into

sound to be sent to speakers or
converts sounds to digital formats.

• Cable Connectors – used to communicate with the

motherboard and other components of the computer.
Printer

CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Drive
Reads CDs or DVDs

Power Supply

Network Card/Modem – LAN of WIFI

COMPUTER SOFTWARE
- Computer program

- Refers to the instructional information that directs the

activities of the computer hardware or helps the user
control the hardware components of the computer.

- Word processors, databases, spreadsheets, e-mail

programs, web browsers and everything else the
computer runs and executes are all kinds of software.
