AIR POLLUTION FROM COAL-FIRED POWER PLANTS
According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, in an average year, a typical
coal plant (500 megawatts) generates the following amounts of air pollutants:
• 3.7 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2)
• 10,000 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2)
• 10,200 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx)
• 500 tons of small airborne particles
• 220 tons of hydrocarbons
• 720 tons of carbon monoxide (CO)
• 170 pounds of mercury
• 225 pounds of arsenic
• 114 pounds of lead, 4 pounds of cadmium, and other toxic heavy metals
Take Uong Bi power plant as an example
With a capacity of 630 MW
The plant burns 7500 tons of
coal a day
Producing over 1000 tons of
waste

TECHNOLOGIES
SUPERCRITICAL STEAM GENERATOR
• A supercritical steam generator operates at
pressures above the critical pressure –
22 megapascals (3,200 psi)
• Liquid water immediately becomes
indistinguishable from steam
• Water passes below the critical point as it
does work in a high pressure turbine and
enters the generator's condenser, resulting
in slightly less fuel use
TECHNOLOGIES
HYDROGEN PRODUCTION
Hydrogen is seven to ten times better at transferring heat than air
The hydrogen is circulated by fans
on the ends of the generator rotor
then passes over coolers which
have water circulating through
them. The heat which is absorbed
by the hydrogen gas as it passes
through the generator and around
the rotor is transferred to the
water in the cooler
