ENERGY IN VIETNAM

POWER SECTORS IN VIETNAM

HYDROPOWER
Hydropower or water power is
power derived from the energy of
falling or fast-running water.
Vietnam can exploit the
hydropower capacity of around
25,000-26,000MW, equivalent to
about 90-100 billion kWh of
electric power Vietnam has an
exploitable hydropower capacity
of about 25-38 GW
HYDROPOWER IN VIETNAM
• Buôn Kuốp Hydroelectric Power
Station (280MW, Srepok RiveR, Đắk Lắk
Province)
•  Đa Nhim Hydroelectric Power Station
(160 MW, Đa Nhim River, Ninh Thuan)
• Hàm Thuận – Đa Mi Hydroelectric Power
Complex ( 300 MW, La Ngà River, 175 MW, Đa
Mi River, Binh Thuan)
• Hòa Bình Dam (1,920 MW, Black River, Hoa

• Lai Châu Dam (1,200 MW,  Black River,  Lai
Chau)
• Na Hang Dam/Tuyen Quang Dam ( 342 MW,
Gam River,  Tuyen Quang)
• Sơn La Dam (2,400 MW, Black River, Son La)

WIND POWER IN VIETNAM
Wind power or wind energy is the use of wind to provide mechanical power
through wind turbines to turn electric generators Wind power is a sustainable,
renewable energy source that has a much smaller impact on the environment

SOLAR POWER
Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity
Using 2 common types of technology:
Photovoltaic Connentrating solar-thermal power (CSP)
SOLAR POWER: TECHNOLOGIES
Photovoltaics (PV)
Energy from the sunlight is
absorbed by the cells in the panel,
which creates an electric field
across the layers and causes
elecricity to flow.
SOLAR POWER: TECHNOLOGIES
Connentrating solar-thermal
power (CSP)
Mirrors are uesd to reflect and
concentrate sunlight onto
receivers that collect solar energy
and convert it to heat, which can
then be used to produce
electricity or stored for later use.
It is used primarily in very large
power plants.

GENERAL ABOUT COAL IN VIETNAM
Coal is the world’s leading source of energy to produce electricity
Coal-powered generation is the most cost-effective option for Vietnam
Tons
Coal Reserves 3,703,761,600
Coal Production 42,468,697
Coal Consumption 56,641,097

Plays a very significant role in ensuring the future of the national energy security

AIR POLLUTION FROM COAL-FIRED POWER PLANTS
According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, in an average year, a typical
coal plant (500 megawatts) generates the following amounts of air pollutants:
• 3.7 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2)
• 10,000 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2)
• 10,200 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx)
• 500 tons of small airborne particles
• 220 tons of hydrocarbons
• 720 tons of carbon monoxide (CO)
• 170 pounds of mercury
• 225 pounds of arsenic
• 114 pounds of lead, 4 pounds of cadmium, and other toxic heavy metals
Take Uong Bi power plant as an example
With a capacity of 630 MW
The plant burns 7500 tons of
coal a day
Producing over 1000 tons of
waste

TECHNOLOGIES
SUPERCRITICAL STEAM GENERATOR
• A supercritical steam generator operates at
pressures above the critical pressure –
22 megapascals (3,200 psi)
• Liquid water immediately becomes
indistinguishable from steam
• Water passes below the critical point as it
does work in a high pressure turbine and
enters the generator's condenser, resulting
in slightly less fuel use
TECHNOLOGIES
HYDROGEN PRODUCTION
Hydrogen is seven to ten times better at transferring heat than air
The hydrogen is circulated by fans
on the ends of the generator rotor
then passes over coolers which
have water circulating through
them. The heat which is absorbed
by the hydrogen gas as it passes
through the generator and around
the rotor is transferred to the
water in the cooler
TECHNOLOGIES Electrode Collector plate

ELECTROSTATIC PRECIPITATOR (ESP)

• A filtration device that removes fine
particles from flowing gas using the force
of an included electrostatic charge
minimally impeding the flow of gases
• ESP applies energy only to the
particulate matters which the are
collected
• ESP collection efficiency is usually higher
than 99%
