"Fighting the French and Indian War was very expensive for the British government. After
the war, they placed British soldiers in former French forts, which was also expensive. To
help pay for the soldiers, the British government decided to start taxing the American
colonists, who had never been taxed before. The colonists had only been taxed by their own
governments. The first taxes were the Sugar Act of 1763 and the Stamp Act of 1764. The
Americans did not believe the taxes were fair because they had no elected representatives in
the British government."
