CONSUMER PRODUCTS
Consumer products- Products that are bought by individuals for their personal needs/wants.
There are 4 types of consumer products:
1. Convenience Product - Products that we purchase frequently such as our essential needs in our homes.
Ex: Bread, coffee, rice, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.
2. Shopping Products - Products that we purchase but do not purchase frequently compared to convenience
products.
Ex: Clothing, furniture, gadgets
3. Specialty Products - Products that have unique features and brands that we purchase only when we need/want it
badly.
Ex: Sports car, paintings, expensive perfumes
4. Unsought Products - Products that the consumers don’t normally think of buying
Ex: Fire extinguishers, Encyclopedia, funeral services

Methods of Separating
Components of
Mixtures
and Compounds
1. CHROMATOGRAPHY
Chromatography is a process for separating
components of a mixture. To get the process
started,
the mixture is dissolved in a substance called
the
mobile phase, which carries it through
a second substance called the stationary
phase. It is used not just for separation but also
for the purification and identification of
components.
Example:
A filter paper is a typical material used in chromatography because it can separate distinct elements of
colored solutes present in a mixture. The separation of ink and solvent is an example of this method.
2. DISTILLATION
• Distillation, or classical distillation, is the
process of separating the components or
substances from a liquid mixture by using
selective boiling and condensation. Dry
distillation is the heating of solid materials to
produce gaseous products.
• Distillation, process involving the conversion of
a liquid into vapor that is subsequently
condensed back to liquid form.
EXAMPLE:
Heat the unclear water
3. FILTRATION
• Filtration is a physical or chemical separation
process that separates solid matter and fluid from a
mixture using a filter medium that has a complex
structure through which only the fluid can pass.
• Filtration is a process that removes particles
from suspension in water. Removal takes place
by a number of mechanisms that include straining,
flocculation, sedimentation and surface capture.
EXAMPLE:
Brewing coffee involves passing hot water through the ground coffee and a
filter.
4. CENTRIFUGATION
• Centrifugation is a technique that helps to
separate mixtures by applying centrifugal
force.
• Centrifugation is a method of separating
molecules having different densities by
spinning them in solution around an
axis (in a centrifuge rotor) at high speed
EXAMPLE:
The extraction of fat from milk in order to produce skimmed milk.
5. EVAPORATION
• Evaporation, the process by which an
element or compound transitions from
its liquid state to its gaseous state below
the temperature at which it boils; in
particular, the process by which liquid
water enters the atmosphere as water
vapor.
• Evaporation happens when a liquid
turns into a gas.
EXAMPLE:
Evaporation from the oceans is the primary mechanism
supporting the surface-to-atmosphere portion of the water
cycle. After all, the large surface area of the oceans (over 70
percent of the Earth's surface is covered by the oceans)
provides the opportunity for large-scale evaporation to occur.
6. FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION
• A fractional distillation is used when separating
mixtures of liquids whose boiling points are
similar (separated by less than 70 oC). In a
fractional distillation, a mixture of liquids is
boiled and the resulting vapors travel up a glass
tube called a “fractionating column” and separate.
The fractionating column is placed between the
flask containing the mixture and the “Y” adaptor
and improves the separation between the liquids
being distilled.
EXAMPLE:

A crude oil is the common example of

fractional distillation , fractional
distillation separates crude oil into a
useful fractions
7. MAGNETIC SEPARATION

• Magnetic separation is the process of separating

components of mixtures by using magnet to attract
magnetic materials. The process that is used for magnetic
separation detaches non-magnetic material with those that
are magnetic.
• Magnetic separation means separating mixtures of two
solids with one part which has magnetic properties.
EXAMPLE:
Scrap Metal Recycling
8. CRYSTALIZATION

• Crystallization or crystallisation is the process

by which a solid forms, where the atoms or
molecules are highly organized into a structure
known as a crystal. Some of the ways by
which crystals form are precipitating from a
solution, freezing, or more rarely deposition
directly from a gas.
EXAMPLE:
Ice and snowflakes are great examples of the crystallization of water.
9. SEDIMENTATION
• Sedimentation is the process of allowing
particles in suspension in water to settle out
of the suspension under the effect of
gravity.
• Sedimentation is a physical water treatment
process using gravity to remove suspended
solids from water. Solid particles entrained by
the turbulence of moving water may be
removed naturally by sedimentation in the still
water of lakes and oceans.
EXAMPLE:
A mixture of sand and water, sand settles down at the bottom.
LET’S SEE IF YOU LEARNED
SOMETHING TODAY!
Let’s play.
1. - You can't seperate the components or
substances from a liquid mixture without
heat
- Centrifugation is a process of boiling and
condensing a liquid mixture.
- Brewing coffee is the example of
filtration
2.
- Chromatography is for separation of
mixtures only.

- There are two phases in order two seperate

components of a mixture in
chromatography. Mobile phase and
stationary phase

- Extraction of fat from milk is the example

of centrifugation.

attention today. Hope you all learned
