Introduction

*The present continuous (present

progressive) tense is a way to convey
any action or condition that is
happening right now, frequently, and
may be ongoing.
*It adds energy and action to writing,
and its effect helps readers
understand when the action is
happening.

A new pattern or Habit

Future plans
1)Ongoing Events
>> First, we use the present continuous for things that
are happening at the moment of speaking. These
things usually last for quite a short time and they are
not finished when we are talking about them.
Eg. a)I'm working at the moment.
b)Please call back as we are eating dinner now.
c)Julie is sleeping.
>> You can use the present continuous to describe
immediate events taking place in the current moment.
Eg. a) “She is eating dinner right now and cannot
answer the phone.”
2)Temporary Events
>> We can also use this tense for other kinds of temporary
situations, even if the action isn't happening at this
moment.
E.g: a)John's working in a restaurent until he finds a job in
his field.
b)I'm reading a really great book.
c)She's staying with her friend for a week.
>>Compare this with the present simple, which is used for
permanent situations that we feel will continue for a long
time.
E.g: a)I work in a school. (I think this is a permanent
situation.)
b)I'm working in a school. (I think this is a temporary
situation.)
3) A new pattern or habit
>>A really interesting way of using the present
continuous tense is to describe events or actions
that are new and different from events in the past.
>>In this case, the tense can be used to highlight
the contrast between the old and new.
E.g. a) “These days, people are writing emails a lot
less than they used to a few years ago.”
>>It can also be used to describe a regular habit
that someone has – whether it is a good habit, or a
bad one!
E.g. a)“You’re always running late with all your
deadlines!”
4)Future Plans
>>When describing something that will take place
in the future, the present continuous tense can be
used
E.g: a) “When we arrive at the airport, we are
taking a private car direct to the hotel.”
>>In this case we have already made a plan and we
are pretty sure that the event will happen in the
future.
E.g: a)I'm meeting my father tomorrow.
b)We're going to the beach at the weekend.
c)I'm leaving at three.
