INTRODUCTION:-
VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE:-
The architecture in which the major creative force is the
local needs, construction materials, which reflects a long local tradition is called Vernacular
architecture. Vernacular architecture shows slow evolution over time and reflects
environmental, Historical Cultural, Technological and Economic context in which it exists. The
vernacular architecture also varies from region to region, depending upon the climatic
factors and the availability of local materials.
LOCATION:-
This is the literature study of the the basal village that is located in
solan district in Himachal Pradesh.

Minimum elevation: 895 ft.


Maximum elevation: 9,223 ft
TOPOGRAPHY:-
The topography of this area is mountainous with elevation ranging from 300 meters
to 3000 meters from above sea level. The mountain ranges of the district lie on the
outer Himalayas and are a part of Shivalik ranges.

HOUSES IN HIMACHAL:-
The character of a Himachal vernacular house is the story unit which is basically a
cuboid. The smallest houses are two or three layers stacked in two or three levels
(ground, first and second floor).The size of the house increases by placing cuboids
side by side and then extending up three levels. Each house is determined by
capacity. The capacity is not only the size of the family but also the family’s socio–
economic status
CLIMATE:-
The Solan lies on 1532m above sea level. The climate in Solan is warm
and temperate. When compared with winter, the summers have much
more rainfall. ... In  Solan, the average annual temperature is 17.4 °C |
63.4 °F. The annual rainfall is 1413 mm | 55.6 inch.
ABOUT BASAL:-
 According to Census 2011 information the location code or village code of Basal village is
021914. Basal village is located in Solan Tehsil of Solan district in Himachal Pradesh, India. It
is situated 5km away from Solan, which is both district & sub-district headquarter of Basal
village. As per 2009 stats, Basal village is also a gram panchayat.
 The total geographical area of village is 490 hectares. Basal has a total population of 3,668
peoples. There are about 871 houses in Basal village. As per 2019 stats, Basal villages comes
under Solan assembly & Shimla parliamentary constituency. Solan is nearest town to Basal.

ABOUT SERVICES:-
 ELECTRICITY:
The electrical lines are run along with the road that are comes from solan city. The sub station
of this are is approx 1km far from the village.

 WATER SUPPLY:
Water supply lines are present within the village that comes under the municipal committee of
that area. The main water tank present over the hill. The water comes through gravity system.
But there are some houses which has not separate water water lines.

 DRAINAGE:
The slope of this area is North East to South West. There is no sewarage lines with in the
village. They have own septic tank in there houses.

floor and two are in first
floor and one staircase.

side area of house. And
there is and is a big
courtyard in the front of the
house.

THE ATTIC:-

 An interesting part of the house is the attic which is used to store corn which forms
the staple diet of the people.
 The two windows on the sides ventilate and dry the corn at the same time
protecting from the rain.
 Although the main function of the attic is to insulate the house, it serves as an
excellent storage space.
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION TECHIQUES:-

 All the building construction material used is locally available like the stone
and sand of which the walls are made, the timber is also readily available.
 The staircase used to reach the first floor of the house is made of timber, with
stone slabs also introduced.
 Mud is used for the construction.
 Slates are used on the roof.
 In the Vernacular architecture of the Himalayan region wood is extensively
used, as the forests of the deodar wood and other mixed forests were easily
available.
 Wood and stone walls not only resist the racking forces of the earthquake, but
are also configured to resist sliding or overturning.
CULTURE AND TRADITIONS:-

 75% of population depend mostly on agriculture and animal husbandry as prime economic
activities.
 Some of the most commonly spoken languages are Hindi and the various Pahari languages.
 The Hindu communities residing in Himachal include
the Brahmins, Rajputs, Kannets, Rathis and Kolis.
 There are also tribal population in which mainly
comprise Gaddis, Kinnarms, Gujjars, Pangawals and Lahaulis.
 An assortment of cultural activities such as dancing, singing, wrestling and many more
comprise this three days celebration at Solan.
