About…

• Based on a true story, a world class African-American

Pianist Dr. Don Shirley goes on a concert tour in the
South in the 60s
• He travels with a personal driver, Tony Lip an Italian
bouncer from the Bronx, who starts the movie off
with many racist views
• Throughout the movie, Don must combat the racism
and injustices he experiences in the South as he tours
• Tony Lip grows to change his views and forms a
bond with Don, defending him from the hatred-filled
states
Leadership – Dr. Don Shirley and Tony Lip
• Don Shirley was put into multiple situations where he needed to stand up and be a leader, even
when it was the most difficult
• There was a scene in the film where Don is not allowed to eat in the restaurant he is performing
at due to segregation laws
• The manager tries to force Don to take his food into a small closet near the kitchen

• Don and Tony sticks up for him and exclaim he should be able to sit and eat before he performs as
everyone in the building is there to watch him
5 Practices of Leadership Displayed
Model the Way- Don and Tony both model the way by standing up strong with courage and love in their
hearts, they stand up for each other and others.
Inspire a Shared Vision- Their shared vision was to have a safe, fun concert tour and to combat the excessive
racism in the south.
Challenge the Process- They challenge situations often in the film, aside from the previous slide, there were
many times where Don was discriminated against and both Tony and him challenged the southern ideals.
Enable Others to Act- Don specifically tries to enable others to see him as what he is, a human being with a
gift of playing the piano. Tony also enables others to lose their racist ideals.
Encourage the Heart- Throughout the movie we see a change in Tony’s heart as he unlearns his racist ways
and grows to stand up for those discriminated against. Him and Don encourage others to only exert love and
appreciation into the world.
