Adverbs of

sequence
We use adverbs of sequence to
describe the order in which
things happen/happened.
Used to:
• tell a story
• write a recipe
• give directions.
Adverbs of sequence almost always come at the beginning of a sentence and are followed by a comma (,):
First, do your homework.
After that, walk the dog.
Next, read to your sister.
Finally, you can relax.
Before breakfast, you should clean your room.
After lunch, I go shopping.

First and next can also go at the end of a sentence.


Do your homework first.
Read to your sister next.
