ADDITION OF POLYNOMIALS
Functions with overlapping domains can be added,
subtracted, multiplied and divided.  If
f(x) and g(x) are two functions, then for all x in the
domain of both functions the sum, difference,
product and quotient are defined as follows.
(f+g)(x)=f(x)+g(x)
(f−g)(x)=f(x)−g(x)
(fg)(x)=f(x)×g(x)
(f/g)(x)=f(x)/g(x) , g(x)≠0
ADDITION
(f+g)(x)=f(x)+g(x)
EXAMPLES
Let f(x)=2x+1 and g(x)=x2−4
= (2x+1)+(x2−4)
= x2+ 2x – 4 + 1
= x2+2x−3

Let f(x)= 3x+1and h(x)= (2x−3)

EXERCISE

2

f(x) + g(x) = (8x + 5)+(x2−2)

f(x) + g(x) = x + 8x −2 + 5)

f(x) + g(x) = x + 8x + 3
2
f(x) = 3x2 + 2x − 4 and h(x)= x +3

f(x) + h(x) = (3x2 + 2x − 4) + (x +3)

f(x) + h(x) = 3x2 + 2x + x − 4+3
f(x) + h(x) = 3x2 + 3x - 1
Let f(x)=8x-5 and g(x)=3x2 − 5x - 2

= 3x2+ 8x – 5x – 5 - 2
= 3x2 +3x−7

Let f(x)= 17x+3 and g(x)= (5x−8)

= (17x + 3)+(5x−8)
= 17x + 5x + 3 - 8

SUBTRACTION OF POLYNOMIALS
Functions with overlapping domains can be added,
subtracted, multiplied and divided.  If
f(x) and g(x) are two functions, then for all x in the
domain of both functions the sum, difference,
product and quotient are defined as follows.
SUBTRACTION
(f−g)(x)=f(x)−g(x)
EXAMPLE
(f – g)(x) = f(x) – g(x)

f(x) = 2x2 + 3x – 4 and g(x) = 2x + 3

(f – g)(x) = (2x2 + 3x – 4) – (2x + 3)
(f – g)(x) = 2x2 + 3x – 4 – 2x – 3
(f – g)(x) = 2x2 + 3x – 2x – 4 – 3

= 2x2 + x – 7
EXERCISE
f(x) and g(x)
f(x) – g(x)
f(x) = -x + 5 and g(x) = 3x + 2
f(x) - g(x) = (-x + 5) - (3x + 2)
f(x) - g(x) = -x – 3x + 5 - 2
f(x) - g(x) = - 4x + 3
f(x)= (8p 2 − 5) and g(x)= (10p 3 + 9p 2 −20)
f(x) - g(x)

f(x) - g(x) = (8p 2 − 5) - (10p 3 + 9p 2 −20)

f(x) - g(x) = - 10p 3 + 8p 2 − 9p 2 − 5 + 20
f(x) - g(x) = - 10p 3 - p 2 + 15
(5p 2 + 3) (2p 2 − 3p)
10p 4 - 15p 3 + 6p 2 - 9p

(5p + 2) (5p − 4)
25p 2 - 20p + 10p - 8
25p 2 – 10p - 8
