I?
3 BRANCHES
OF THE
GOVERNMENT
UNLOCKING OF DIFFICULTIES:

 REPUBLIC
- a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and
which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.
 GOVERNMENT
- the system by which a nation, state, or community is governed.
 STATE
- a nation or territory considered as an organized political community under one government.
 LAW
- the system of rules which a particular country or community recognizes as regulating
the actions of its members and which it may enforce by the imposition of penalties.

OF THE GOVERNEMNT

 EXECUTIVE (Art. 7)
 LEGISLATIVE (Art. 6)
 JUDICIARY (Art. 8)
LEGISLATIVE DEPARTMENT
- the “law-making body”

Functions:
A. Enacts laws;
B. Repeal laws;
C. Amend laws; and
D. Has the authority to declare war
Composition:

House of Senate
- the “upper house”
- has 24 members; “Senators”
- 6 years of service

House of Representatives
- the “lower house”
- has 435 members; “Representatives”
- 3 years of service
EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT
- the “law-enforcing body”

Function:
A. Execute;
B. Enforce; and
C. Administer laws

*The executive power is vested upon the President.


Composition:

President
- 6 years of service
- serving as commander in chief of the armed forces
- head of the executive branch
- appoints (and may dismiss) his/her cabinet members
whom he/she presides over
- power to sign or veto legislation
Vice President

- 6 years of service
- The second highest official
- first in line to succession should the president resign, be
impeached or die in office

Cabinet

- Cabinet members serve as long as the president who


appointed them remains in office
- principal spokespersons for administration policy
JUDICIAL DEPARTMENT
- has the sole “power to interpret laws”

Functions:
A. interprets the meaning of laws
B. applies laws to individual cases; and
C. decides if laws violate the Constitution
Composition:

Supreme Court
-Judges and justices serve no fixed term — they
serve until their death, retirement, or conviction by the
Senate
-which has a Chief Justice as its head and 14 Associate
Justices, all appointed by the president on the
recommendation of the Judicial and Bar Council
