Precipitation
Reactions
 Precipitation reactions are similar to those
of H2O however the compounds which are
insoluble in liquid NH3 vary considerably
from those which are insoluble in H2O.
 Most metal chlorides are insoluble in liq.
NH3 except NaCl, NH4Cl and Becl2
Chemical Equations
Metal nitrates
Most metal nitrates are soluble in liq. NH3.
The addition of nitrates of a number of
metals into the solutions of Ammonium
Iodide or Bromide, in liq. NH3 causes
Ammonium precipitation of metal bromide or iodide.
iodide Ammonia
Chemical Equations
Sulphides
Similarly, the ions i.e. sulphide dissolves in
liq. NH3 will precipitate the sulphides of
various metals
Chemical Equation

Ammonium sulphide
KNH2 in liq. NH3
KNH2 in liq. NH3 will also precipitate the
Amide, Imides and Nitrides of many
metal ions as KOH precipitates the metal
hydroxide and oxides in water.

KNH2
Chemical Equations
Amphoteric Reactions
Like water amphoteric bahavior is also shown in
liq. NH3.
Many metallic amides are amphoteic like many
oxides and hydroxides.
In liq. NH3

ZnCl2
In H2O
In Acids
 All acids which are strong acids in water
react completely with NH3 (i.e. are
leveled) to form NH4+ ions
e.g.

HClO4
Acid strength equivalent to NH4+ ion: as H3O+
in water, now acidic character is due to NH4+
ions i.e. leveled
All acids which behave like weak acids in
water (with pKa =12) react completely with
NH3 and hence act as strong acids in NH3
In H2O weak acids

 Here they act as strong acids in liq.

NH3 which are weak acids in H2O.
