HOW TO SAY A DATE?

FOR EXAMPLE : 1 JANUARY

THE FIRST OF JANUARY
AND
IT’S JANUARY FIRST

Order of Days and Months when
saying the date

Month + Day: December 25th – used in

United States.* OR
Day + Month: 25th December – used in
the rest of the world.
Writing the date in English
For example, Christmas day is written:
• 12 / 25 / 17   in United States (the month is first) and
• 25 / 12 / 17   in the rest of the world (the day is first).

 3/4/17 ?

March fourth, twenty seventeen (in United States) OR

The third of April, twenty seventeen (in the rest of the world)

To avoid confusion, when writing an email or any other written form of English, it is best to write
the month as its name (January, February, etc.) or its abbreviation (Jan. Feb. etc.) and NOT as its
number.
And remember, the months are always written in Capital letters.
In US English, a comma is put after the day if it is followed by a year.
• March 17, 2016.
• December 22, 2012.
How to say the year
There are two ways to say the year in English. Until the year 2000, every year was pronounced as two numbers.
For example,
1485 – fourteen eighty-five
1750 – seventeen fifty
For the first years of previous centuries, we add ‘0’. For example:
1801 – eighteen o one

While for the first ten years of the 21st century, we use the word ‘thousand’. For example:
2000 – two thousand
2006 – two thousand six

From the year 2010 onwards you can say two numbers again. For example,
2012 – twenty twelve
However, some people continue to use ‘thousand’ and say:
2012 – two thousand twelve
