Conventional Wind Turbine
Technology

 The wind turbine industry is dominated by the

conventional 3-blade Horizontal Axis Wind
Turbine (“HAWT”)..................................................…….. …but they are not without performance issues.

The top 10 manufacturers represent 68.3%

of the market.

 To a lesser degree, Vertical Axis Wind Turbines

(“VAWT”) are used to generate wind power
(small nameplate capacity).

Record Year for Wind Energy Development in Canada
2014 was a record year for wind energy
development in Canada with new
installed capacity from 37 wind energy
projects totalling 1,871 MW. Canada
finished 2014 with nearly 9,700 MW of
total installed capacity – supplying
approximately 4 per cent of Canada’s
electricity demand with enough power
to meet the needs of over 2 million
Canadian homes.

In 2014, wind energy projects were

built and commissioned in the Canadian
provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Alberta,
Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
Of the 37 new wind energy projects
installed in 2014, 15 projects also
include significant ownership stakes
from First Nations, Municipal
Corporations or local farmers.

continues to rise

 No longer no. 1 in the world in

terms of installed wind power
capacity since 2013, the installed
capacity continues to rise in the
US.
 Texas, even with its long history
of oil production, leads all states
with 15,635 MW of installed
capacity.

continues to be policy driven with
tax incentives for both consumers
and wind farm operators,
however, wind has emerged as a
viable source of electricity in the
US, where it now represent 4.4%
of all electricity generated.

Failsafe Oil/Gas Pipeline Solutions
 To date, claims made of “fail-safe” oil and gas pipelines
have not lived up to their promises.
 As recently as July 15, 2015, about 5 million litres of
bitumen, wastewater and sand leaked from Nexen’s
“failsafe” pipeline near Long Lake, Alberta, 36 kms SE
of Fort McMurray, AB.

“We’re deeply concerned that this incident has happened

and we need the investigation to go through its full
course. We’ll be looking at our operating procedures, our
design procedures — just everything — to get a root
cause.”
- Ron Bailey, Sr. VP, Nexen

“A spill this size into the Muskeg, which is an important

part of the ecosystem in the region and house many of our
medicines, berries and habitat for species our people rely
on for sustenance, is extremely serious. The repercussions
from the incident could potentially be felt far and wide.”
