HOW CAN YOU PLAN FOR THE CORONAVIRUS AFFECTING

YOUR BUSINESS AND ITS WORKFORCE?

CASE STUDY 

 Since Dec 31, 2019, the Chinese city of Wuhan has reported an outbreak of atypical pneumonia
caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). Cases have been exported to other Chinese
cities, as well as internationally, threatening to trigger a global outbreak.
 Novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) pandemic. The virus is new, and it is very dangerous because its
vaccination is not yet found. The virus spreads through the contact. Whole world is
lockdown/quarantine because of this virus.
 China, Italy, Spain, France, USA all the developed countries are in very bad conditions.  

 The whole world's economy is in very bad situation. But still every human being is fighting with this
virus. 
 How this pandemic is affecting my hotel and our business and how we can come out of it. 
FACTS 

O India's first case was reported on January 30 in Kerala. 


O Coronavirus cases were started increasing in our country day by day. Taking it into consideration
our countries PM. Mr. Narendra Modi announced 21 days lockdown.
O All the hotels are closed in the nation. 

O Hotel industries are facing major challenges. As March unfolds, international travel has dropped
dramatically. And Now all the international travel is banned across the world, all flights are
cancelled. Being in the service industry which is totally dependent on the travelers. In my hotels
our SPA is closed, café is closed. We are only providing HK and FP service to our guest, only
few employees are working in the hotel to provide the service for our residential guest. 
O The Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) said there was an impact from coronavirus spread on the
business, but was difficult to quantify yet.
O "It (impact) could be less in this quarter, and more going ahead. People are traveling less. People
are worried,"
FACTS

O When the first case was reported in India my hotel GM has took some strict decision to prevent from
this virus.
o Thermometer at the staff get to check the body temperature
o Hand sanitizer at every place 
o No biometric use
o Distribution of mask to all employee. 
o Showing videos to employees the video about the virus 
o Arranged training on Coronavirus/ arranged a session by our doctor (How to take precaution)  
O Hotel took the decision to use the greatest amount of transparency possible, communicating the
health status of our overall workforce within the company so that people are aware of the situation. 
O We are minimizing client and internal travel and asking our people to minimize risks of transmission
by hand washing and avoiding personal contact.
ASSUMPTION 

O Yes, it is affecting our business and our workforce.

O International travel is stopped across the world, it is affecting our business (no arrival and
departure).
O Our Café is closed 

O SPA is not working

O Basic HK & FP service we our providing to our residential guest. 

O Affecting the vendor business

O Because of lockdown very few employees are working in the hotel.

O All the trainees were released before completing their training.

O Only few employee are working to provide HK/FP service

O It is affecting the salary of the employees 

O It is affecting to all our vendors who provides us all the services.

APPROACH
1. Map out the As-Is organization: how many people we have, where?
2. Get expert advice on the best actions to be taken for personal safety.
3. Decide what data is required for the company to support individual employees and manage the
whole organization. An example of gathering data at the department level.
4. Collect the data - Example of data collection from each manager regarding each team member.
5. Aggregate the data in reports that allow decision making
6. Identify contingencies to minimize risk and ensure business continuity
7. Choose a cycle of decision making (daily / weekly / monthly) for effective support
