Concept
• In morphology
Clipping is the process of forming a new word by dropping one or more
syllables from a polysyllabic word.
such as a cellphone from a cellular phone.
In other words, clipping refers to the part of a word that serves for the whole,
such as ad and phone from advertisement and telephone.
The term is also known as a clipped form, clipped word, shortening, and
truncation.
Types of clipping
• There are three types of clipping: final, initial, complex
• Final clipping (apocope)
Pick the first syllable or syllables of a word to form the clipped term.
E.g Information => Info
Gasoline => Gas
• Initial clipping (apheresis)

Pick the last syllable or syllables of a word to form the clipped term.
E.g
Robot => Bot
Helicopter => Copter
Parachute => Chute

• Complex Clipping

The shortening of a compound word by preserving and combining its initial parts (or first syllables)
E.g
Sci-fi for science fiction
Sitcom for situation comedy
Grandma for grandmother
Perm for permanent wave
The differences between clipping and
blending
Blending => Combining two words being a single new term

Binary + digit = bit

Clipping => Reducing a word that more than two syllable

Influenza = flu
