The Virginia Company

Virginia???

The Virginia Company’s charter granted by King James I created the boundaries of the 34 th and
41st parallels running from “ sea to sea” west and northwest. They did not know the distance
from sea to sea which lead to problems of the western border later on.
All right, let’s motor, baby!

Wow, that was quick!

Jamestown

105 men and boys of the Virginia Company set

sail on three ships: Susan Constant, Discovery,
and Godspeed. They landed April 26, 1607!
The men settled 30 miles up the James River on
a marshy peninsula where they were safe from
the Natives and the Spanish. They would be
governed by a council of seven men, designated
among them by the Virginia Company.

Yes!

James I, King of England, allowed

the citizens of Virginia the same
liberties of English citizens.

It’s the year 1608, 27 year old swashbuckling solider-of-fortune, Captain John Smith took charge.
He saved the colony by imposing a strong work ethnic.

“Awww….my

“Hey, no

When the men would work, there hands would

become painful and they would swear out loud.
Smith didn’t like this, so to discipline them he would
pour cold water down there sleeves.

Money

1612- Tobacco became Virginia’s “gold” when John Rolfe

discovered a new way to cure it. Smoking became the rage
in England, and the Virginia Company prospered by
exporting this cash crop.
In 1614, John Rolfe married Princess Pocahontas, who had become a Christian, taken the
name Lady Rebecca, and wore English clothes. The Virginia company brought John Rolfe
and Princess Pocahontas to London to promote a Virginia lottery and introduce Pocahontas
to King James I. in 1617, Pocahontas dies and the Peace of Pocahontas ends.

House of Burgesses

House of Burgesses unites for the first time in

1619 at Jamestown, Virginia. 5 generations later
in 1776 leaders from Virginia assembly, now
accustomed to political freedom, would lead
the colonies to independence from England.
I am here before
1616 so I get 100
acres. YAY. I’m so
happy I could eat
a turkey.

I am here in 1617 so I
only get 50 acres and I
Ruff. I fat am by myself. I should
and juicy get 1 more so I can get
another 50 acres.

The Headright System allowed private ownership of land.

Each pre-1616 settler received 100 acres of free land while
each thereafter received 50 acres, plus another 50 for every
person he brought from England.
Ninety adventurous women arrived in 1610, sent by the
Virginia company as wives for the Jamestown settlers.
Each groom paid 120 pounds of tobacco for his bride’s
passage.
1619- Ironically, at the time the Virginia Company extended political and economical freedom
to the colony, two groups not included in these freedoms were brought to Virginia.
Now

slaves

20 kidnapped Africans were sold to Jamestown

settlers by the captain of a Dutch ship. As
indentured servants, they probably were freed
after several years. But by the 1600s black
servitude turned into black slavery.
In 1622 the Powhatan Indians massacred 347
Virginians at noontime. It was a surprise attack! The
colonists’ retaliation, along with disease, took its toll:
by 1700 only about 1,00 of the 9,000 Powhatan
Indians survived. 

GRR! AHH!!
ATTACK!
1624-King James 1-did not like the representative government and used the massacre
and the Virginia Company’s financial issues as a reason to revoke the Company’s
charter and make Virginia a royal colony. Then he got rid of the House of Burgesses.
1639- King Charles 1 reinstated House of Burgesses.
Sir William Berkeley served as
one of the first royally
appointed governor of
Virginia (1642) Although
an able ruler, he didn’t use
any liberty.
In western Virginia, Governor Berkeley,
an autocratic ruler, levied high taxes,
while denying frontiersmen a voice in
the government and protection from
the attacking Indians. The settlers
rebelled against him in the 1670s.
In 1676, Nathaniel Bacon, a farmer, lead a rebellion against
Governor Berkeley, making him leave Jamestown, and burning the
town. Bacon suddenly died from an illness and with that, so did
the rebellion. King Charles II replaced Berkeley, making the colony
run harmoniously again.
