C FUNCTIONS
 Exponential functions are often used to represent real-
world applications, such as bacterial growth/decay,
population growth/decline, and compound interest.
 Through the study of exponential and logarithmic
functions, important decisions can be made. Future

TAKE
NOTE
Exponential functions are widely used in
describing economic and physical phenomena
such as compound interest, population growth,
annuities, appreciation and depreciation, and
decay of radioactive materials. Exponential
functions involve a constant base and a variable
exponent.

A GLIMPSE
Problem:

Mr. Cruz deposited money in the bank which earns 5% annual interest compounded
annually. Computation is done every year to know the interest earned. The first interest
is added to the deposit. This sum also earns interest for the next period.
Supposed Mr. Cruz’ initial deposit is Php 500. After the first year, the money would
earn Php 25.00 since Php 500(0.05) = Php 25. At the beginning of the second year, the
amount is already Php 525.00.
A GLIMPSE
The table below illustrates how the money grows year after
year.
Time Involved Amount of Money in the Bank
At the beginning Php 500
After one year Php 500 + Php 500(0.05) = Php 525.00
After two years Php 525.00 + Php 525.00(0.05) = Php 551.25
After three years Php 551.25 + php 551.25(0.05) = Php 578.81
And so on…
A GLIMPSE
The table below illustrates how the money grows year after
year.
Computation:

Time Amount of Money in the Bank After 1 year: 500 + 500(0.05) = 500(1 + 0.05)
Involved = 500(1.05)
At the beginning Php 500 = Php 525.00
After 2 years: 500(1.05) + 500(1.05)(0.05) = 500
After 1 year Php 500 + Php 500(0.05) = Php 525.00 After 3 years: 500(1.05)3
After 4 years: 500(1.05)4
After 2 years Php 525.00 + Php 525.00(0.05) = Php 551.25 And so on…
After n years, the total amount of money A deposited is
After 3 years Php 551.25 + php 551.25(0.05) = Php 578.81 denoted by:

And so on… A = 500(1.05)n A = P(1 + r)t

REMEMBER
A = P(1 + r)t
where P is the principal, r is the interest rate
compounded annually, t is the number of
years , and A is the amount after t years.

 Solution:
At the start of an experiment , there
are 2000 bacteria in a colony. In 2 hours, Using N = N0ekt
the population has tripled. Assume that N = 2000ekt
N = 6000 the population has tripled
the growth law N = N0ekt applies. 6000 = 2000ek(2) t=2
3 = e2k divide both sides by 2000
1. Determine ek =
1. ek = or
2. Determine the population 10 hours 2. N = 2000ek(10)
after the start of the experiment. = 2000(ek)10
= 2000 ()10
= 2000(35)
= 2000 (243)
= 486,000 population of bacteria in
the colony after 10 hours
REMEMBER
N = N0ekt
where N0 is the original population present at time t = 0, N is
the population present at time t, k is a constant (rate of
growth) of the population, and e is an irrational number used
as based of exponential function which is approximately
equivalent to 2.71828.
