Gantt Charts

Origins of the Tool 

In the late 1800s, Polish engineer Karol Adamiecki developed a visual work flow chart that he called a 
"."harmonogram
In around 1910, Henry Gantt, a management consultant and engineer, took Adamiecki's concept to the 
next stage. His chart was designed to help manufacturing supervisors see whether their work was on,
.ahead of, or behind schedule, and it formed the foundation of the tool we use today
?Why Use Gantt Charts 
When you set up a Gantt chart, you need to think through all of the tasks involved in your project. As 
part of this process, you'll work out who will be responsible for each task, how long each task will take,
.and what problems your team may encounter

Creating a Gantt Chart
To create one for your project follow these steps

Step 1: Identify Essential Tasks 

Step 2: Identify Task Relationships 
Step 3: Input Activities Into Software Or a Template 
Step 4: Chart Progress 

Key Points

Gantt charts are useful for planning and scheduling projects. They help you assess how 
long a project should take, determine the resources needed, and plan the order in which
.you'll complete tasks. They're also helpful for managing the dependencies between tasks
Gantt charts are useful for monitoring a project's progress once it's underway, too. You can 
immediately see what should have been achieved by a certain date and, if the project is
.behind schedule, you can take action to bring it back on course

PERT Chart

 What is a PERT chart?

 PERT stands for Program Evaluation and Review Technique. A PERT chart illustrates a
project as a network diagram.

 Project managers create PERT charts to gauge the minimum time necessary to complete
the project, analyze task connections, and asses project risk. PERT charts make it easy to
visualize and organize complex projects illustrating the dependencies between each step in
the project.

How to draw a PERT chart

 You can design your PERT chart in a few different ways. The traditional PERT chart
(also known as an activity-on-arrow diagram) contains two different elements:

• Nodes represent events or milestones in your project. You can use either numbered circles
or numbered boxes.

• Arrows represent tasks. The direction of the arrows shows the sequence of tasks.
Diverging arrows indicate that you can complete those tasks concurrently.

To create a PERT chart, a project management team should follow
these steps

.Step 1: Identify all of the project’s activities 

.First, define all of the major phases, milestones, and tasks needed to complete the project 
Step 2: Identify dependencies 
If you determine some tasks or activities have dependencies, you will want to depict those tasks with 
.directional arrows. This will ensure your team knows the sequence they need to tackle each task
.Step 3: Draw your chart 
The next step is to take the events and milestones (numbered nodes) you’ve identified and draw them out. Then 
write out the tasks and activities that the team must complete between each node, using directional arrows or
.divergent arrows accordingly
Step 4: Establish timelines for all activities 
You should now set a timeframe when the team will need to complete those tasks along all arrows. For 
example, in our mockup above, you can see the “Train sales” activity has a timeframe of 1 day. This can
.represent the estimated timeframe and/or deadline you set for the activity

Difference between PERT & Gantt Charts

Pert charts Gantt charts

PERT chart is similar to a network diagram .Gantt chart is defined as the bar chart

PERT chart was developed by the United States .Gantt chart was developed by Henry L. Gantt
.navy

PERT chart can be used  for large and complex Gantt chart is often used for Small Projects
Projects

PERT chart focuses on the dependency of Gantt chart focuses on the time required to
.relationships complete a task

PERT chart could be sometimes confusing and Gantt chart is simpler and more straightforward
complex but can be used for visualizing critical
path
