Day 1
Erosion
Do you remember?
Physical/Mechanical Weathering – the breaking up
of earth’s surface into smaller pieces by some
mechanical/physical force.

Chemical Weathering – the breaking down of earth’s

surface by a chemical process (oxidation, dissolved by
acids or water)
Physical weathering by wave action. Chemical weathering by

The salt in the water corrodes
the steel in the concrete and
caused cracks.
Soil Erosion
Erosion

Erosion means the general wearing down and

molding of all landforms on the Earth's
surface. The movement of soil or rock from one
place to another (usually by wind or water).
Erosion moves pieces of the Earth.
GIFT
S
TRA As pieces of the Earth are broken down
D by weathering, they are carried away in a
process called erosion.
EVE Water is a common way that pieces of the
NT Earth are moved to a new location. Wind
also contributes to erosion by blowing the
LTR
particles away. Glaciers can pick up
pieces of the Earth and drag them to new
locations. They are slow but powerful.

Wind erosion
GIFT
S
TRA Wind can play a role by carrying
D material (especially sand and clay)
from one place to another.
EVE As the wind blows, it picks up small
NT particles of sand/sediment and blasts
large rocks with the sand/sediment,
LTR cutting and shaping the rock.

When rain falls to the Earth it can
TRA evaporate, sink into the ground, or
D flow over the land as runoff.
EVE
NT When it flows over land, erosion
occurs. Runoff picks up pieces of
LTR rock and "runs" downhill cutting tiny
grooves (called rills) into the land.

Ice erosion
GIFT
S Glaciers wear down the landscape;
by picking up and carrying debris
TRA that moves across the land along
D with the ice.
EVE
Glaciers can pick up and carry
NT sediment that ranges in size from
sand grains to boulders bigger than
LTR houses.

Moving like a conveyor belt or a

bulldozer, a single glacier can move
millions of tons of material!

Gravity

GIFT
S
TRA
Gravity Erosion is better known
D
as Mass Movement and is
EVE defined as the transfer of rock
NT and soil down slope by direct
action of gravity without a
LTR flowing medium
(such as water or ice).
How does this affect
us?
Humans are constantly influencing
the nature of our landscapes.

HOUSES, ROADS, BUILDINGS,

DEVELOPMENTS, CANALS, etc.,
all change the shape and appearance
of the land.

LTR Weathering, erosion and deposition
deposition
As particles are moved by water, wind,
and ice, they settle in new locations.
Deposition happens when wind or water
slows or when ice melts.

As particles are deposited in once place

over time, the particles can build up,
producing new landforms.
