MINDORO
• Is an Island located in
southern Luzon. It is composed
of two provinces: Occidental
Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro.
Tagalog is the main language of
Mindoro. Though some parts and
greatly influence by the native
Visayan and Mangyan languages.
INDIGENEOU
S TRIBES
• Ratagnon – a tribe occupying the
southernmost tip of Maindoro
• Alangan – a group that occupies the
northern part of both Oriental and
Occidental Mindoro.
• Iraya – a group of people based in the
upland part of Northwest Mindora.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT
TYPES OF VOCAL MUSIC IN
MINDORO?
• Marayaw – is genre of Iraya-Mangyan used to
communicate with spirit in rituals for healing
the sick and protection the community.
• Pamuybuyen – it means fear of water.
• Ambahan – is one of the indigenous vocal music
of Mindoro. It is rhythmic poetic expression of
seven-syllable lines with rhythmic end-
syllables.
• Ayung or Ngayung – ritual chat.
• Igway – is the word used by the Mangyans for
“song.”

• Lantoy – a tiny flute that


can be played either by
nose or mouth.
• Agung – consist of two
light gongs played by two
men squatting on the floor.

• Bangsi – is a bamboo flute


with a glued chip on its
tube.
• Kaluntang – this percussion
stick played in pairs to
produce harmonies on second,
third, and fourths.

• Budyung - A short length of bamboo
with both sides open.  There are no
holes on the body of the bamboo. 
The flute is played by cupping the
mouth on one end and blowing
creating a trumpet-like sound.
• Pituh – a flute that is diatonically
tuned with fingerholes but no thumb
hole. 
What are the samples of

• Gitgit – a three-string
indigenous violin with human hair
as strings.
• Kudyapi – it is a two-stringed
lute with long neck shaped like a
boat. It has wooden tightening
rods and frets made of beeswax.
