02 Introduction to antennas
● A transducer, which converts electrical power into electromagnetic waves and vice versa

● Capability of sending or receiving electromagnetic waves for the sake of communication

●  The working of antennas Maxwell's equations, Faradays’s laws and Ampere’s law

● Antenna reciprocity
03 Basic terminologies
● Frequency:
The rate of repetition of a wave over a particular period of time

● Bandwidth:
A band of frequencies in a wavelength, specified for the particular communication

● Wavelength:
The wavelength is the distance between repeating units of a wave pattern.

● Gain:
Measure of the maximum effectiveness with which the antenna can radiate the power delivered to
it by the transmitter
03 Basic terminologies
● VSWR:
The ratio of maximum power to minimum power in the wave can be measured and is called the
standing wave ratio (SWR).

● Directivity:
Ability of the antenna to focus EM waves in particular direction

● Radiation Intensity:
 Power per unit solid angle
● Antenna Beamwidth:
Difference between half power points (3dB points) on antenna radiation pattern is referred as
antenna beamwidth.
04 S parameters
● Known as Scattering parameters

● Describe how energy can propagate through an electrical network

● Describes a network in terms of amplitude and phase versus frequencies, rather

than voltages and currents

● S-Parameters are used to show a complicated network as a simple black box

● Easily understand about a system

04 S parameters

S12: Reverse voltage gain

S21: Forward voltage gain

S22: Output port voltage reflection coefficient

06 Fields (EM)
Near Field Far Field

● Nearer to the antenna ● Far from the antenna

● Has inductive effect ● Radiative effect is high

● Also known as inductive field ● Also known radiation field
