Thermal Properties of Matter

IX-Phy-AKUEB
Difference between Temperature and Heat
Heat Temperature

It is the form of energy which is transferred from a hot It is the measure of hotness of coldness of a body.
body to a cold body

It corresponds to the total thermal energy of particles It is proportional to the average kinetic energy of
of a body. particles of a body

It is measured in units of Joules and calories. It is measured in units of Kelvin, Farenhiet or celcius.

It is measured using a Calorimeter. It is measured using a thermometer.

It depends on mass. It is independent of mass.

• 1. Convert the temperature given in the Celsius scale to the Fahrenheit scale:
• (i) 25° C
• (ii) 45° C
• (iii) 0° C
• (iv) 20° C
• (v) 90° C
• (vi) 40.3° C
• (vii) 65° C
• 2. Convert the temperature given in the Fahrenheit scale to the Celsius scale:
• (i) 102° F
• (ii) 37° F
• (iii) 200° F
• (iv) 175° F
• (v) 185° F
• (vi) 158° F
• (vii) 68° F
• Convert 200K into celcius and Farenhiet. 200K = -73ᵒC = -99.4F
Specific Heat Capacity:
Heat Capacity:
• Amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of any mass
of a substance by 1C or 1K.
Explanation:

A B C
Latent heat
• latent heat, energy absorbed or released by a substance during a
change in its physical state (phase) that occurs without changing its
temperature. The latent heat associated with melting a solid or
freezing a liquid is called the heat of fusion; that associated with
vaporizing a liquid or a solid or condensing a vapour is called the
heat of vaporization.
Which point is the melting point of given
substance?
• Calculate the amount of heat required to raise the temp of ice at -10C to
10C. Mass = 100g = 0.1kg
Practice Questions:
Q1. The boiling point of water is 100 ᵒC. Convert this temperature into
Kelvin and Fahrenheit. K =373K, F =212F

Q2. The normal human body temperature is 98.6 ᵒF. Convert this
temperature into celsius and Kelvin. C = 37 C and 310K
Temperature Conversion:
* Celsius to Kelvin:
K = C + 273
Conversely, K – 273 = C

• Farenheit to Celcius/centigrade:
C = (F – 32) / 1.8

Conversely, (1.8 x C ) + 32 = F
