PASCAL’S

TRIANGLE
PA S C A L’ S T R I A N G L E
PA S C A L’ S
TRIANGLE

• Named after Blaise Pascal

• It is also called Staircase of mount
meru, Khayyam, Yang hui’s
triangle.
• Has various applications in
Mathematics, such as in algebra,
probability theory, combinatorics,
statistics, and so on.
• Shows us how many ways heads
and tails can combine.
PA S C A L’ S
TRIANGLE

• A kind of number pattern

• The triangular arrangement of numbers
that gives the coefficients in the
expansion of any binomial expression.
• The triangle is symmetric.
• The outside numbers are all 1.
• The second diagonal shows the positive
integers while the next diagonal are
called triangular numbers.
• The fourth diagonal are called tetrahedral
numbers.

TRIANGLE

• The sums of the rows give the

powers of 2.
• Each row gives the digits of the
powers of 11.
• Each entry is an appropriate
“choose number.”
• And those are the “binomial
coefficients.”
• The Fibonacci numbers are there
along diagonals.

PASCAL’S TRIANGLE BINOMIAL

For a binomial of the form (a+b)n, perform these steps to expand the expression:
EXPANSION
Defines the coefficients which appear
Step 1: Determine what the a and b terms
in binomial expansions. That means the nth row of
are in the binomial.
Pascal’s triangle comprises the coefficients of the expanded expression of the polynomial
Step 2:nDetermine the nth power that the binomial is being raised to. This will also
(x + y) .
determine which row in Pascal's triangle to use to expand our expression.
Step 3: Use the numbers nin the row of Pascal's triangle determined in step 2 as the
The expansion of (x + y)  is:
coefficients for the terms in the expanded expression.
The exponents on the a in each term will start at n and decrease to 0.
(x + y)n = a0xn + a1xn-1y + a2xn-2y2 + … + an-1xyn-1 + anyn
The exponents on the b in each term will start at 0 and increase to n.
Step 4: Simplify.
