Fog computing approach for

localization and improved analytical

system in WSN - scenario based.

Praveen Kumar Chukkapalli,

AP18110010286.
What is WSN..?
● WSN stands for Wireless Sensor
Networks.

WSN is an infrastructure comprised of

several sensor nodes, where the main
objective of a sensor node is to collect
information from its surrounding
environment and transmit it to one or
more points of centralized control
called base station.
What is Fog computing ..?
● Fog Computing is a paradigm proposes an
extension of the cloud-based computing to
the network edge of the network.

Fog computing places processes and

resources at the edge of the cloud, often on
network devices while data remains stored in
the cloud.

This leads to faster processing times and

fewer resources consumed.
Why Fog computing Approach can be
used in WSN..?
● As the Fog computing facilitates localized analysis closer to the data
sources , it improves the responsiveness and integrity of the system .

It allows better utilization of the scarce sensor resources by reducing

packet transmissions to the cloud, along with a reduction of impact on
Network connection issues.

Fog-enabled Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) system can be installed

for activity monitoring and localization in the context of Ambient
Assisted Living especially for elderly people.
Proposed Fog computing model in
WSN.
● I Propose a WSN-based system for
localization of the elderly in order to
facilitate autonomous mobilization in a
given environment.

The solution is based on self-tracking and

WSN architecture consists of two types
of devices wearable sensor device and
cloud gateway node.

WSN.
CLOUD

Data processing will be Selective data will be

done at gateway level uploaded to cloud.
(EDGE - Level)
GATEWAY

Wearable devices
connect with gateways
Wearable Devices and share data.
How it works..?
● Proposed system relies on an initial learning phase to understand the user
behaviour and preferences to facilitate anomaly detection and It also assumes prior
knowledge of the user speed that is considered constant for the duration of the
experiment (as expected in the older population).
The wearable device can either be worn around the wrist or on the waist and
consists a 9 degrees of freedom measurable sensors along with accelerometer,
gyroscope and magnetometer.

On-board analysis of the acceleration data is performed using algorithms to identify

the activity state as the user moves around an outdoor environment and Alerts are
generated at the detection of behaviour anomalies such as wandering or fall as
illustrated.
How it works..?
● The results of analysis are stored locally on the device until the user comes in
vicinity of the gateway node hosted indoors and transmitted to the gateway using
mote-mote communication and further uploaded on the cloud using Wi-Fi signals.

The received data would be analysed in Gateway and selective data is uploaded to
the cloud. The modified analytical model is sent back to the device via the gateway
node in a delay-tolerant manner to improve the on-board prediction.

Our system design thereby, facilitates the delay tolerant communication

framework that eliminates the need for continuous Internet connectivity and
ensures the minimal dependency of our system on external infrastructure.
How Localization helps..?
● As the Proposed system works with wearable device and Gateways in any particular
environment, The position of the Gateways are used to determine the location of
the object instead of using GPS.

The traditional way of using GPS for determining the location of the object is
ineffective in some extreme weather conditions and require constant network
connection.

Whereas, the proposed system can determine the location of the object using
gateways and also determine the location of anomaly caused using the stored
information such as speed, acceleration in the device.
How Localization Improves Analytical
system..?
● As the Proposed system works with wearable device and these can store data at
any environment until its connected to the nearby gateway for data upload.

This improves network connectivity issues providing continuous data gathering and
segregation.

The collected data will analysed at gateway level providing effective processing
power and only the required data will be uploaded to the cloud.

The collected data will be analysed and anomalies and the location of anomaly will
also be estimated using collected data thereby providing the accurate and selective
data segregation facility. This improves the performance of analytical system.
Illustration.
Data would be stored in INDOOR
device until, its out of range.
Indoor Location - 1 Indoor Location - 2

obj

OUTDOOR
Gateway 2
Gateway 1
Illustration contd.
If the anomaly detected by the device
at LOC - 1 and the collected data as
INDOOR follows:

Time from anomaly report : 00:20 sec

LOC - 1 Indoor Location - 1
Avg.speed = 0.5 M/s

Anomaly reported distance from

obj
gateway : (20 sec * 0.5)=10 meters
away.

The data from the other sensors

OUTDOOR would be used to determine the
directions of object to find out exact
Gateway location of object at that instance.
Advantages In Real-life:

Elderly people or young children can be carefully monitored at any

environment (outdoor or indoor).

As, the system is designed to deal with connectivity issues, accurate and
continuous data can be recorded at any circumstances.

Data storage and cloud computing costs can be reduced as the data
analysis will be done in gateways and selective information will be
uploaded to cloud.
Expected Drawbacks for real-life applicability:

Establishment of several nodes (Gateways) would be

costlier and configuration of them to determine the
location would also be a complicated task.

The algorithms to determine the Location of the anomaly

from data are not proven optimized and may not give
accurate results.
The End..!
