contains as many elementary entities as there
are atoms in exactly 12.00 grams of 12C.

Percent Composition and Empirical Formulas
Determine the empirical formula of a
compound that has the following percent
composition by mass:
K 24.75%, Mn 34.77%, O 40.51% percent.

Practice Questions
Question 1
How many atoms are there in 0.250
moles of carbon?
Answers:
0.25 x 6.02 × 1023 = 1.51 x 1023 atoms
Question 2
Below is the mass
spectrum of boron. The
relative heights of the
peaks show the relative
abundance. Calculate the
relative atomic mass of an
atom of boron
Answers:
This graph can be used to calculate the isotopic abundance of 10B:
23 ÷ (100 + 23) = 0.187
To calculate the relative atomic mass of an atom of boron:
(10 x 23) + (11 x 100) = 1330 1330 ÷ (23 + 100) = 10.8
Question 3
A sample is burned in oxygen. 0.069 g of CO2and
0.0113 g of H2Ois produced. What is the empirical
formula of the sample burned?
Answers:
Moles of carbon in the sample = (0.069/44) = 0.00157
Moles of hydrogen in the sample = (0.0113/18) x 2 =
0.00126
Ratio of carbon to hydrogen = 1.25 : 1
Empirical formula ratio = 5 : 4 so the empirical formula is
C5H4
Question 4
A compound has the empirical formula HO and the
relative formula mass is 34. What is the molecular
formula?
Answers:
Empirical formula mass = 16 + 1 = 17
34/17 = 2 so the molecular formula is H2O2.
Tips and Trick
Preparation
•Read the syllabus and learning objectives
•Arrange your learning schedule and target
•Master the materials in the book
•Do the questions at the end of each chapter in the book
•Practice a lot using past papers (adjust your timing
like the actual exam) then mark your work using the
answer keys
•You must set realistic targets for your desired mark
Tips and Trick
During the exam
•Arrive early
•Have breakfast
•Prepare the stationary, participant ID etc from the night
before
•RELAX (just do it like what you have been
practiced)
