Language Registers

Language register is
the level of formality
with which you speak.
Different situations
call for different
language registers.

1. Static or Frozen Style
• This style of
communication RARELY
or NEVER changes.
• It is “frozen” in time
and content.
• May include old grammar
or words
Examples:

The Pledge of Allegiance, the


Lord’s Prayer, biblical verse,
the Constitution, the Alma
Mater, a bibliographic
reference, laws
2. Formal Style
This language is used in formal
settings and is one-way in
nature.
Used in professional, academic,
and legal settings
It is usually impersonal and
formal.
Uses complete sentence, avoids
slang, and may use technical and
academic vocabulary
Examples:
sermons, rhetorical
statements and questions,
speeches, pronouncements
made by judges,
announcements
3. Consultative Style
People uses this
register often in
conversation with
someone who has
specialized knowledge
or offering advice.
Tone is respectful
Examples:

when strangers meet,


communications between a
superior and a subordinate, doctor
& patient, lawyer & client, lawyer
& judge, teacher & student,
counselor & client
4. Casual Style
oThis is informal language used
by peers and friends.
oSlang, vulgarities and
colloquialisms are normal.
oThis is “group” language.
oOne must be member to
engage in this register.
Examples:
buddies, teammates, chats and emails, and blogs, and letters to friends
5. Intimate

 This communications is
private and usually between
two people.
 It is reserved for close
family members.
 This uses endearments and
expressions shared among
small set of people
Examples:
Conversation between husband & wife,
boyfriend & girlfriend, siblings, parent &
children
