MODULE No. 3
Basic Rules and Regulations and Skills in Basketball
OBJECTIVES:
• Interpret the rules and regulations in playing
basketball
• Understand the terminologies used in the game
• Identify the skill-related components apply in the
game.
• Know the importance of different skills in
basketball
The Basics
• Basketball is a team sport
• A contact sports
• 2 teams of 5 players inside the court
• Aim to shoot ball through a hoop
elevated 10 feet above the ground
The Game
• Each game is divided into two sections
• Each quarter are twelve minutes’ long
• If the score is tied at the end of the regulation, then
overtime is played until a winner emerges.
• Each team is assigned a basket or goal to defend. At
halftime, the teams switch goals.
• The game begins with one player from either team at
center court.
• A referee will toss the ball up between the two.
• This is called a tip-off. In addition to stealing the ball
from an opposing player, there are other ways for a team
to get the ball.
 
Scoring
• WHEN A TEAM MAKES A BASKET,
THEY score two points AND THE BALL
GOERS TO THE OTHER TEAM.
• IF A BASKET, OR field goal is made
outside the of the three-point area arc,
THEN THAT BASKET IS WORTH
THREE POINTS
• A FREE THROW IS WORTH one point.
Free Throws
• Awarded to a team according
to the number of fouls
committed in a half and/or the
type of foul committed.
• Fouling a shooter always
results in two or three free
throws being awarded.

Violations Committed by a Player
• Traveling- taking more than two steps without or after dribbling the ball.
• Double dribble- dribbling the ball with both hands.
• Goaltending- a defensive player is not allowed to interfere shot if the ball is on
downward path going into the goal.
• Backcourt violation- intentionally return the ball to the backcourt since the ball is
already in the frontcourt.
• Five-seconds inbound violation- offensive player has only 5 seconds to inbound or
pass the ball to his teammates.
• Three-second violation- offensive team who stays at the restricted or free throw
area for more than 3 seconds.
• Eight-second backcourt violation- offensive team has eight seconds to cross the
ball from backcourt to front court.
• 24-second shot clock violation- offensive team has 24 seconds to make a goal
attempt
Types of Basketball Fouls
IN BASKETBALL, A foul IS AN INFRACTION OF THE
RULES MORE SERIOUS THAN A VIOLATION. THE
TEAM WHOSE PLAYER COMMITTED
THE FOUL LOSES POSSESSION OF THE BALL TO
THE OTHER TEAM. THE FOULED PLAYER IS
AWARDED ONE OR MORE FREE THROWS. THE
PLAYER COMMITTING THE FOUL "FOULS OUT"
OF THE GAME.
