About Sikkim

 Sikkim is a state in northeast India, bordered by Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal. Part of
the Himalayas, the area has a dramatic landscape that includes India’s highest
mountain, 8,586m Kangchenjunga. Sikkim is also home to glaciers, alpine
meadows and thousands of varieties of wildflowers. Steep paths lead to hilltop
Buddhist monasteries such as Pemayangtse, which dates to the early 1700s.
People of Sikkim

 There are three ethnic groups in Sikkim- Lepchas, Bhutias and


Nepalese. The three ethnic groups of people represent a synthesis
of three diverse cultures, traditions and religions in Sikkim. Due to
a century-long population influx from Nepal, the majority of
Sikkim's residents are of Nepali ethnic origin.

Legend of Sikkim

 According to legend, the Guru blessed the land, introduced


Buddhism to Sikkim and also foretold the era of the monarchy in
the state, which would arrive centuries later. There are numerous
stories regarding the migration of Tibetans into Sikkim and the
establishment of the Sikkimese monarchy.
Languages of Sikkim

three main languages of the Sikkim state are Nepali,
Bhotia and Lepcha. Nepali is spoken by the majority of
the population and is the lingua franca of Sikkim.
Climate of Sikkim

 Sikkim's climate ranges from sub-tropical in the south to tundra


in the north. Most of the inhabited regions of Sikkim experience a
temperate climate, with temperatures seldom exceeding 28 °C (82
°F) in summer. The average annual temperature for most of Sikkim
is around 18 °C (64 °F).
Culture of Sikkim

 Communities, Cultures, Religions and Customs of different hues


intermingle freely here in Sikkim to constitute a homogeneous
blend. The predominant communities are the LEPCHAS,
BHUTIAS and NEPALESE. In urban areas, many plainsmen have
also settled and they are almost engaged in business and
Government service.
Education of Sikkim

 The Government of Sikkim has accorded highest priority to the


education sector by providing an outlay of almost 20% of the
State's budget and records have shown that much progress has been
achieved, manifesting in remarkable performances by the students.
Population of Sikkim

 In 2021, population for Sikkim was 658,019. Population


of Sikkim increased from 611 in 2011 to 670 in 2020
growing at an average annual rate of 1.03%.
Food of Sikkim

 Sikkim food mainly comprises noodles, Gundruk and


Sinki soups, thukpas, tomato achar pickle, traditional
cottage cheese, fermented soybean, Bamboo shoot, e
fermented rice product and some other fermented dishes
owing to its very cold climate. Rice is, however, the
staple food of the state
