MBBR Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor MBBR
MBBR Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor MBBR
REACTOR (MBBR)
INTRODUCTION
◉ The moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was developed in Norway in the late 1980s and
early 1990s.
◉ This method makes it possible to attain good efficiency results of disposal with low energy
consumption. This process is used for the removal of organic substances, nitrification and
denitrification.
◉ The MBBR system consists of an activated sludge aeration system where the sludge is
collected on recycled plastic carriers. These carriers have an internal large surface for optimal
contact water, air and bacteria.
◉ Reactors have insignificant headloss, no need for periodic backwashing and no susceptibility
for clogging.

The design and operation of these systems has been based for
many years only in the hydraulic operation, with little or no
knowledge of the microorganisms that reside in the system, which
are responsible for the Removal of the Biological Demand for
Oxygen (BOD5), from the Chemical Demand Oxygen and the
toxicity of an effluent, prior to discharge into the body receiver
